Women's Volleyball Honors Seniors With Massive 3-2 Victory Over Campbellsville

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland women's volleyball honored their seniors in the most exciting way imaginable, winning a five set thriller against Campbellsville. The Phoenix dealt the Tigers their first conference loss of the season, leaving it all on the court of the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
Cumberland saw impressive numbers from multiple players, as four attackers surpassed double-figure kills and four defenders double-figure digs. Hazel Konkel led the offensive effort with 16 kills and seven blocks, while Kaleigh Glass picked up 19 digs.
Despite earning the first two points of the game, the Phoenix remained just a step behind Campbellsville as set one unfolded. The Cumberland defenders were impressive from start to finish, keeping plays alive with fearless block coverage while restricting Campbellsville's attacking options. Although the teams were matched in kill count, the Tigers limited their errors to control the lead and handle the set 25-20.
The Phoenix polished their offensive efforts in set two to take a 10-8 lead, forcing the Tigers to make adjustments. Backed by a lively crowd, all of the energy in the gym was working in CU's favor. Staying consistent on all fronts, Cumberland committed only one error at the net while putting up four huge blocks. The Phoenix finished on a 3-0 run as a trio of Campbellsville attacking errors concluded the set at 25-20.
The Tigers made a swift recovery in the third frame with a 3-0 opener that they continued to build on throughout. Campellsville created plenty of breathing room with a 16-8 lead as their scrappy defense made it difficult from the Phoenix to find hardwood. The Tigers more than doubled Cumberland's kill count as they cruised through a 25-13 victory.
The teams battled in a tightly contested fourth set, staying within three points of each other as play progressed. At a 20-20 deadlock, Cumberland muscled through a three point run with the help of back-to-back kills from Layla Young and an ace from Elaine Shaneyfelt. The Tigers quickly retaliated to knot the score once more, creating a rally that sent the set into extra points. The final push saw all out effort from both sides as they traded blows, but two consecutive kills ended it in Cumberland's favor 29-27.
The Phoenix made the first run in the deciding set with a 6-2 start, but the unrelenting Tigers made a recovery to knot it 10-10. Once again, the teams needed extra points to determine a winner. At the 14-14 tie, a Campbellsville service error and a massive swing from Konkel combined to end the game in the most exciting way.
With the regular season coming to an end, the Phoenix will head on the road for their final two matches before the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Phoenix will have a few days to recover from tonight's excitement before heading to Williamsburg, Ky. to face the Cumberlands on November 3. The following afternoon, the team will head to the Georgetown area to see the Tigers for a 2 PM match.
