Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Impressive Numbers From Cumberland 's Front row Sends Them Over the Patriots, 3-2

Williamsburg, Ky.-- Women's volleyball avenges mid-season loss to the Cumberlands, defeating the Patriots in a five set decision.
Having fallen to the Patriots earlier this season, the Phoenix brazenly showed off their improvements and claimed the road victory. Lauren Galvan, Hazel Konkel, and Layla Young were a front row force to be reckoned with, combining for 43 of Cumberland's 61 kills. Freshman Emma Chavers recorded a double-double for CU with 23 assists and 15 digs.
The Patriots also had three attackers post big numbers, led by Anna Blumeier who notched a game-high 17 kills.
Despite dropping the first two balls of the contest, the Phoenix came alive at the net to spark an 8-2 run and establish a lead. The Patriots made a strong retaliation near the halfway point as a trio of kills worked to knot the score 13-13. A swing from Young interrupted the momentum and was the catalyst of a five point run- a crucial collection of points that heavily contributed to Cumberland's 25-22 set one win.
Points were traded back and forth between the teams as set two unfolded. At the 16-16 tie, the Patriots capitalized on Cumberland's error frustrations and ended the set on a 9-2 run. Two consecutive swings solidified the victory for the Patriots with a 25-18 finish.
Recovering from set two's mistakes, the Phoenix doubled the Patriots' kill count to achieve a third frame win. Cumberland led by as many as eight, playing unrelenting offense to hit a .300 as a team. Haunted by attacking errors down the stretch, the Patriots were unable to match Cumberland's energy and fell 25-17.
Despite finding a 10-6 lead in the fourth frame, the Phoenix were impeded by their own errors and allowed the Patriots to flip the script with a 14-3 run. From then on, the Patriots had created enough breathing room to claim the set and force a fifth battle.
The score was locked for the majority of set five as both teams handled their side of the court impressively. At the 14-14 tie, Camila Martinho made a smart tip kill and the Phoenix ended it all with a huge block to claim the 16-14 win.
Cumberland will stay on the road as they head to Georgetown, Ky. tomorrow to play their last regular-season match against the Tigers. The game is set for a 1 PM CT start.
