Cumberland gets back to .500 with 62-15 rout at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.--Cumberland football put up a season-high 62 points as they ran wild to rout St. Andrews 62-15 on the road.

Cumberland got back to 4-4 in the win over the Knights in their final non-conference game of the season. The Phoenix picked up 477 yards of offense in their best output this season with 373 rushing yards. The Phoenix had 12 possessions in the game and nine of them ended in touchdowns.

Running back Treylon Sheppard posted his fourth game of the season with over 100+ rushing yards finishing with a team-high 145 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries. Nick Burge finished with 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Luke Holloway finished 6-of-10 for 76 yards and a touchdown pass. He also rushed for 57 yards and a score, his eighth rushing touchdown this season. Zach Holtclaw also got in on the action completing one pass for a 31-yard score in the fourth quarter.

The Phoenix had five receivers catch passes in the game. Isaac Finch and Tim Freel each had a touchdown catch. Elijah Gaskin, Shaw Niblett, and Kaiden Hatchett each recorded a reception.

The Phoenix had a good day on special teams returning the football. Gaskin got loose on a 75-yard touchdown return for a touchdown. He finished with 103 return yards and Nate Stephens had 53 yards returned on three tries on punts.

The defense stood strong again holding the Knights to 15 points and 289 yards of offense. The Knights had their best attack through air throwing for 228 yards.

Xaylin McKinnie and Joey Samples led the team in tackles with five. Eli Denton had his first career interception and the Phoenix came up with a blocked field goal to keep points off the board.

Action was slow in the first for Cumberland. The Phoenix scored on their second possession as Sheppard scampered for a 64-yard touchdown run, his second-longest this season to put CU up 7-0 after the first.

Cumberland started hitting their rhythm in the second quarter after a blocked field goal sparked a drive. The Phoenix went 51 yards on seven plays to score capped by a three-yard touchdown run from Burge for a 14-0 lead.

The Knights responded on the next drive for a touchdown, their lone score in the first half. Quarterback Darius Holly threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ellison Sandifo for 14-7 Phoenix lead with 8:41 left.

Cumberland wasted little time scoring in five plays, this time it was Holloway who ran in for an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Phoenix added one more score in the second quarter. With 31 seconds left in the half, Hollow threw a strike to Finch for his first passing touchdown since the Kentucky Christian game in September and a 28-7 lead at the break.

Cumberland received the opening kick of the second half and ran a reverse with Gaskin. He found a seam and weaved through the defense for a 75-yard touchdown return on the kickoff to extend it to 35-7.

The Phoenix quickly took back over in plus territory after Eli Denton intercepted a pass. A couple plays later, Sheppard punched in his second touchdown of the game, but the point-after try failed for a 41-7 lead.

CU took over after a quick three-and-out, this time they nickel and dimed their way down the field. Burge capped the drive with his second touchdown rush of the game, this one from one yard out, 48-7 lead with 3:01 left in the third.

The Phoenix defense stood strong again and forced a quick punt. Three Sheppard rushes ended with a 32-yard score and a 55-7 lead for their final score of the third quarter.

In the fourth, Cumberland scored one more time. This time, the backup QB Zach Holtzclaw threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Freel for the final score of 62-15.

Cumberland will be on the road for the fourth-consecutive week heading to Columbia, Ky. to take on No. 7 Lindsey Wilson. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. central time.
