Men's Basketball responds with 72-70 Gritty Win over Columbia International to close out The Show

KINGSPORT, Tenn.--Cumberland Men's Basketball bounces back after a 43-point loss yesterday with a gritty two-point win over Columbia International to close out the Show at the Meadowview Garden Resort.

The Phoenix trailed by one with under a minute to go. The Rams had the ball, but the defensive pressure forced CIU to turn it over. Cumberland had a crack at the lead as Demarius Boyd took the go-ahead shot and missed, but senior Jaylen Negron came up with a big offensive rebound and gave CU the lead with 34 seconds to play. Columbia International had a chance to regain the lead, but the Rams missed and Negron hit a free throw to extend it to 72-70. CIU went for the win, but missed the three as time expired.

Boyd finished with a game-high 28 points, his second most this season and fourth 20+ point game of the season. He went 11-for-20 and 3-for-6 from deep. Negron had 13 points including the final three of the game to seal the win.

Doyle Cockrill III posted 11 points off the bench and drilled three triples. Matthew Stokes had eight points and nine rebounds off the bench. Demond Franklin, Khi Wallace, and Triston Conger each added four points.

The Phoenix shot 44.8% from the field with seven three-pointers. Cumberland went 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. Cumberland was out-rebounded by the Rams 41-to-31 and committed 11 turnovers with only four in the second half.

Columbia International (6-3) finished shooting 48.3% from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc going 4-of-17 and 0-for-8 in the second half.

Christian Howard and Dianthony Heathcock led the Rams with 19 points apiece. Heathcock notched a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Brandon Hunt scored 10 off the bench.

CU came ready to play in this one as they came out and knocked down their first four shots to get a five-point lead after two minutes, 9-4. Leading 14-10, CIU scored back to back buckets on a two and three to take their first lead up 15-14 with 14:27 left in the half.

Cumberland again regained the lead after Boyd scored on two straight possessions for a 20-15 lead, but the Rams came storming back and took the lead at 23-22 and held it throughout the rest of the half. Columbia International got up as much as seven, but Boyd and Negron led CU on a 5-0 run to close the half to cut into the lead at 39-37.

Out of the break, the Phoenix didn't score in the first three minutes of play allowing CIU to take their largest lead of the game at nine, 46-37.

Still up by nine at 50-41, Heathcock stole and had a chance to really swing the momentum for the Rams. He tried a windmill dunk and missed allowing CU to get out in transition that ended with a tomahawk slam from Wallace to get the Phoenix going.

The slam sparked an 11-4 run with Cockrill drilling a three to trail by two, 54-52 with 11 minutes left. The Phoenix got within one after Cockrill hit his second three of the game trailing 56-55, but CIU went on a 5-0 run to get back up by six.

Down 63-57, Boyd got a two to go and Negron converted an and one. A couple possessions later, Boyd laced a triple for the first Cumberland lead in the second half at 65-63 with five minutes to play.

Cumberland held onto a one possession lead until the two minute mark when Heathcock got a jumper to go up by one. The Phoenix quickly answered as Franklin put CU back up by one, but again Howard gave the Rams a one point lead with 1:20 left on the clock.

After the Rams stopped CU, Cumberland answered with a stop. Negron had the biggest rebound of the game on the offensive end for second chance points and a lead with 20 seconds to play. After a miss, Negron hit one of two free throws to go up by two and Cumberland got the stop as Darrian Oates went for the win as time expired.

Cumberland will finally have their home opener this upcoming Tuesday as CU hosts Oakwood at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena at 7:00 p.m.
