Phoenix Defense Close Out Home Opening Win Down the Stretch 79-76 over Oakwood

LEBANON, Tenn.--The Phoenix led by as much as 18 in the second half, but Oakwood came storming back in the final 10 minutes. Cumberland closed the game on a 6-0 run in the final minute and a half to seal the deal and win on their home opener, 79-76.

Cumberland (3-5) won their second consecutive game, the first time this season that they have won back-to-back games. CU shot 47.6% from the field and drained eight threes shooting 50.0% behind the arc. The Phoenix went 11-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Five Phoenix finished in double-figures led by Demarius Boyd scoring 19. Boyd went 8-for-13 in  22 minutes draining three three-pointers. Khi Wallace posted 12 points going 5-for-9 with five boards and two blocks.

Doyel Cockrill III scored 11 points on two made threes with a team-high four dimes. Demond Franklin had 10 points and four rebounds and Jaheim Berry scored 10 off the bench.

Oakwood (0-7) made a push in the second half. The Ambassadors made six threes in the second half on their way to nine in the game. They shot 44.6% from the field. Oakwood out-rebounded Cumberland 42-to-36 and had eight blocks on the defensive end.

Judelin Prophete had a game-high 26 points and notched 11 rebounds to go with it for a double-double. Prophete also had five of Oakwood's eight blocks. Nicholas Kennard had 14 points and made four threes. Brian Williams and Amyr Dickerson each finished with 10 points.

Cumberland started the game slow as they made just one basket in the first three minutes of play. Over that time, Oakwood was able to build a 9-2 lead, the largest lead of the game for the Ambassadors.

By the first media timeout under 12 minutes left in the half, Cumberland got back into the game as everyone chipped in. Berry made a three and hit a two at the end of the run. Jaylen Negron, Franklin, Wallace all converted two pointers to cut it to a one-point game at 16-15.

After the stoppage, Boyd gave Cumberland their first lead on a layup. After some back and forth action, Cumberland was able to get the lead and extend it out to eight as Braxton Carruthers drained a three from the left wing and then he forced a steal and gave Franklin a fast-break layup to lead 35-26, with a little less than four minutes in the half.

The Phoenix pushed the lead out to double-figures taking it to the locker room up by 10, 41-31.

Out of the half, Boyd drained a three and nailed a jumper to score five of CU's first six and further extend the lead.

Cumberland was able to extend the lead all the 18 points after Cokrill drained a three to make it 58-40 with 14:06 left.

The Phoenix held on to a double-figure lead to 70-60 with 6:54 to play, but at that point Cumberland got stuck on 70. The Phoenix went over three minutes without a point and during that span Oakwood went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead 71-70 with 3:49 to play.

Cumberland made some subs to shake it up at that point and immediately Berry got a steal and Triston Conger finished the layup for the lead. Next possession, Prophete went down the floor and got it right back for the Ambassadors, 73-72.

After a foul sent Matthew Stokes to the line, Keyshawn Robinson made a play grabbing on an offensive rebound on the missed free throw and was fouled, sending him to the line. Robinson knocked down one-of-two to tie the game with 2:31.

After a couple stops from both sides, Nicholas Kennard drained a three giving Oakwood a three-point lead. Next possession, Robinson again made a play grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back up for two. On the ensuing inbound, Berry picked Oakwood's pocket again and this time, Franklin made a layup to retake the lead.

The Phoenix got a stop on the defensive end forcing a turnover and Oakwood sent Conger to the line. Conger made both of them push it to a three-point cushion. After a timeout, the Ambassadors drew up a play and Cumberland's defense kept them from even attempting a shot to get the 79-76 win.

Cumberland is on the road on December 5th for their next game as they take on Indiana Tech on the road.
