Phoenix get Burned by Firehawks on the Road in Pulaski

PULASKI, Tenn.—Cumberland drops their second-consecutive game to start the season falling behind early as Tennessee Southern ran away with a 90-74 win over the Phoenix.

Cumberland (0-2) jacked up 30 three pointers and only six, three in the final three minutes of the game. Tennessee Southern controlled the boards as well out-rebounding Cumberland 42-to-32. The Phoenix only had five assists in the game playing a lot of one-on-one basketball.

Demarius Boyd had his second-straight 20+ point performance going for 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Boyd knocked down two of Cumberland six three pointers and added five rebounds. Freshman Doyel Cockrill III had 16 points off the bench and a team-high seven rebounds. He went 9-of-11 from the free throw line.

Demond Franklin was the only other Phoenix in double-figures with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Cumberland shot 42.4% from the field and committed 16 turnovers that translated to 28 points for the Firehawks. Tennessee Southern on the flip side shot 48.0% from the field and knocked down 9-of-20 triples.

The Firehawks scored 50 points from the paint dominating the lane on both sides of the ball.

Six Firehawks ended up with double figures led by Adarion Hudson with 16 points and seven assists. Brady Brown had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Tad Silvey was one rebound shy of double-double with 10 points.

The Phoenix scored on the opening possession of the game, but the lead was short-lived and the only one Cumberland would have throughout the night.

The Firehawks would go on a 15-3 run after CU scored the opening basket to get up by double figures. Cumberland would get back under 10 at the first media stoppage trailing 19-10.

Tennessee Southern would hold on to roughly a 10 point lead all the way to the second media timeout, but would stretch it out to a 21-point lead on a barrage of threes to close the half 49-28.

The Firehawks stayed hot out of the break scoring on their first three trips down the floor holding CU scoreless on a 7-0 run forcing the Phoenix into a timeout down 56-28.

Tennessee Southern held on to the 29-point lead until the final 2:10 of the game. Jaheim Berry came in and laced three triples and Doyle Cockrill started to get some to fall to cut the final score to 90-74.

Good news for the Phoenix is they don't have to wait long to get back on the floor as they will take on Point University tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in a neutral site contest in Pulaski.
