Phoenix Are Too Much for Trojans on Day Two of FHU Classic

Henderson, Tenn. - - Cumberland picked up their first win of the season, controlling the lead from end-to-end, dispatching the Taylor Trojans 72-53.

Cumberland played consistently all game long, never scoring less than 15 points in a quarter, while also moving the ball well. Emaleigh Tarpley just managed to eclipse the 20 minute mark this game, but made great use of her time on the court with a game high 5 assists.

Tarpley was also just one point short of being the sixth Phoenix in double digits, as Lindsey Freeman (17), Kayla Gordon (15), Maddie Brillhart (10), Jana Claire Swafford (10), and Myajae Eubanks (10) all did their part in the Cumberland victory.

Though CU dominated the box score, what will really stick out is how the Phoenix controlled the battle for the paint, scoring a massive 40 points in the paint, compared to just 10 from the Trojans.

After allowing Taylor the opening basket, Cumberland went on a 14-2 run to jump up to an early double digit lead. Both teams had their moments, as the Trojans were held to only free throws for a nearly 6 minute period of time, though they made certain Phoenix lacked the offense to pull away.

The second quarter saw CU grow their lead further as Jana Claire Swafford hit back-to-back three pointers. Also getting in the action, Emaleigh Tarpley grabbed a game-high 5 rebounds in the quarter, dishing out several fast break passes, leading to three assists

Shutting down the Trojan's offensive efforts in the whole second half, Cumberland allowed Taylor just 7 total field goals in the third and fourth quarters combined. Keeping them well in check, only two of TU's players managed double-digits, being kept afloat by a large performance from Claycee West

Lindsey Freeman led the charge for the Phoenix, scoring the most points in the second half, as well as scoring the most in a single quarter of any player, with a clutch seven points in the fourth, to go along with her four boards.

The Phoenix never lost the lead once they took it over for the final time late in the first quarter, and never held a lead of less than five pointers after the break.

Cumberland will be back in action next Friday, November 10th, as they face off against an Oakland city side which is currently receiving votes to be ranked nationally. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
