Wrestling has Strong Showing at Rocky Top Duals going 4-1 against Top Competition

GATLINBURG, Tenn.--Cumberland Wrestling had a strong showing at the Rocky Top Duals picking up four wins over RV St. Thomas, No. 7 Reinhardt, St. Andrews, and Truett McConnell. The Phoenix also gave No. 2 Life a scare before the Running Eagles pulled away in the final three bouts. 

Out of 50 matches on the day, the Phoenix dropped just 11 contests and picked up seven ranked wins including two from Jared Dinh and two from Eli Clemmons. Sammy Shires, Jack Latimer, and Victor Guzman each picked up ranked wins as well on the day. 

#15 Cumberland 38, RV St. Thomas 6

The momentum began at the 125-pound weight class, where #24 Stephen Moreno secured a hard-fought victory with a narrow decision (Dec 4-3), putting STU on the board with 3 points. However, CU quickly seized control, winning the next eight weight classes.

Ivan Arguello at 133 secured a fall (Fall 4:06), followed by #11 Jared Dinh's commanding performance at 141 with a major decision (MD 14-2). Victor Guzman continued CU's success with a major decision (MD 12-3) at 149, and Jack Latimer, ranked #6 at 149 wrestled up a weight class at 157 and added to the lead with a technical fall (TF 15-0 in 2:08).

The dominance continued with #23 Eli Clemmons achieving a technical fall (TF 20-1 in 4:31) at 165, #3 Cole Smith secured another technical fall (TF 18-3 in 5:10) at 174, and Rocco Horvath earned a decision (Dec 10-3) at 184. The match concluded with a final exclamation point as Kadin Stutzman claimed victory with a fall (Fall 2:27) at 197 for the final points for Cumberland.

However, Cumberland quickly shifted the momentum in their favor, showcasing their strength in the middleweight classes.

Ivan Arguello set the tone for Cumberland with an impressive fall (Fall 1:59) over Easton Bishop at 133, propelling CU to a 6-3 lead. The momentum continued as Jared Dinh (141) and Victor Guzman (149) secured crucial decisions, extending Cumberland's lead to 12-3. Jack Latimer's dominant performance at 157, earning a major decision (MD 8-0), further solidified CU's control at 16-3. Eli Clemmons battled to a narrow decision (Dec 4-3) at 165, maintaining Cumberland's lead at 19-3. #2 Life 28, #15 Cumberland 14

Cumberland gave No. 2 Life a formidable challenge, securing wins in the first four bouts and holding the lead heading into the final three. The momentum began at 125, where #16 Chris Busutil of Cumberland displayed dominance with a major decision (MD 11-3) over Kolby Dempsey, propelling CU to an early 4-0 lead. The trend continued at 133, with #7 Sammy Shires extending the lead with another impressive major decision (MD 12-1) over #6 Antonio Saldate, bringing the score to 8-0.

Cumberland's strong start persisted as #11 Jared Dinh secured a hard-fought decision (Dec 7-3) over #12 Bret Minor at 141, further solidifying CU's lead at 11-0. Victor Guzman continued the winning streak at 149, narrowly defeating Cole Homet in tiebreaker-1 (TB-1 6-5) and extending CU's lead to 14-0.
