Freeman's 20-Point Double-Double Leads Cumberland over IU Kokomo 66-51

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland wins their third-straight win behind Lindsey Freeman's 20 point double-double to start the Trojan Classic off right, 66-51 over IU Kokomo.

Cumberland (7-5) started the game off on fire before a run in the third quarter gave the Cougars their first lead. The Phoenix were unfazed and locked down Kokomo leaving them with just three points in the fourth to come away with a 15-point win.

Despite starting the game off so well shooting, the Phoenix ended up shooting 35.5% from the field and went 3-of-6 from deep. Cumberland got to the line 24 times making 19 free throws to really separate the game.

Freeman had a 20-point double-double with 11 rebounds. She went 9-for-17 from the field with three assists. Kayla Gordon continued her streak of double-figure games posting 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists as well. Myajae Eubanks scored 13 points with eight rebounds.

Point guard Faith Colston scored eight points with eight rebounds and picked up four dimes. Maddie Brillhart made her first career start scoring five points. The Phoenix had just four points off the bench as Emaligh Tarpley and Alyssa Goehring each scored two.

IU Kokomo (3-7) shot just 33.3% from the field and struggled from three going 2-for-11. The Cougars converted 11-of-15 free throws. The Cougars got production from several players, but Kelsi Langley was the only one to reach double-figures with 10 points.

The Phoenix started the game on fire knocking down their first four shots from the field. Eubanks scored the first two at the line before Freeman and Gordon scored to get up 6-0. After Kokomo picked up their first points, Freeman scored again and Colston followed with a triple for a quick 11-2 lead.

Cumberland finally missed a shot after that, but quickly found it again as Gordon layed it in off the glass to allow the Phoenix to start 5-for-6 from the field. The shots started to miss and the Cougars started climbing back in it, but Colston drilled her second three of the quarter and Freeman scored on a fastbreak for a 18-13 lead after the first.

Langley converted an and-one to start the second quarter to get it to a one possession game, but Brillhart answered with a triple. After a basket made it a three point game, the deficit stayed at three to 30-27 when Cumberland went on a 6-2 run to close the half with a 36-29 lead.

Leading 38-31 early in the third quarter, Kokomo went on 10-2 run to grab their first lead of the game at 41-40, but the lead last just that possession as Brillhart converted a layup the next time down and Cumberland pushed that out to as much as seven just before the quarter ended. Cameryn rector hit a three before the horn to make it a four-point game 52-48 headed to the fourth.

The fourth quarter was all Cumberland as IU Kokomo went 0-for-12 from the field scoring just three points from the free throw line. The Phoenix pushed the lead out to 66-51 for the final score.

Cumberland is back in action tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. central time as they take on Lawrence Tech in the final game of 2023 for women's basketball.
