RIO GRANDE, Ohio—Cumberland Wrestling opened the dual season with a 38-14 win on the road Rio Grande.
The Red Storm started the match with four point on a 14-6 major decision from Layton Vernon over Bobby Estrada.
Chris Busutil responded with a pinfall victory over Phillip Balis in the first period to give the Phoenix the lead that they would never relinquish.
Jared Dinh picked up six points on a forfeit at 141 and
Jack Latimer added a first period pin at 149 for a 18-4 lead.
Ethan Gomez lost a major decision at 157, but
Eli Clemmons responded with a 12-3 major decision to get the points right back for CU.
At 174,
Cole Smith posted a second period pinfall over Rio Grande's Aiden Greene.
Rocco Horvath followed with a 19-3 tech fall for a 33-8 lead with two bouts left.
JT Oldknow picked up a pinfall in the third period over Anthony Parks and Evan Hulung fell at heavyweight for the 39-14 final score.
The Phoenix will next compete at the Smoky Mountain Duals on December 16 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The opponents are yet to be announced, but check the schedule ahead of the duals for more information.
