WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--Cumberland women's volleyball started day two of the Vipers Sports Academy Classic with a tough loss against a good St. Thomas' team, but the tides turned quickly on day two as the Phoenix rallied to sweep Rust and split the day .
In the first match, The Phoenix and Bobcats were deadlocked in a battle in the opening set, swapping points all the way to 13-13. CU rattled off four straight points to take a three point lead with kills from Galvan and Burbach at 16-13. Leading 18-16, picked up the next seven points on four kills and three Cumberland attack errors to lead the set 23-18. Cumberland picked up two more points, but dropped set one 25-20.
The second set was all Bobcats after swapping points to 6-6. The Bobcats closed the set out on a 20-7 scoring run picking up at least two points for every point the Phoenix would gather to win 25-13 and lead the match 2-0.
After the big second set, St. Thomas continued that momentum into the third set starting out with a 6-1 lead. Cumberland would cut the deficit to four, but five-straight points put the Bobcats up by nine where they held the lead throughout to win the third set 25-18.
In the match, the Phoenix hit .198 as the Bobcats were able to hit .315 with 40 kills. St. Thomas also had eight service aces while Cumberland tallied just two.
Lauren Galvan posted 11 kills in the match on a .333 hit percentage and libero Kaleigh Glass had double-figure digs with 10.
Playing in back-to-back matches, the Phoenix regrouped quickly to defeat Rust in three.
Cumberland started this match off hot. With Galvan serving, the Phoenix racked up the first nine points to get up big. After some short spurt by Rust, they got it within five at 12-7, but CU responded with a 7-1 run to get up 20-8. However, the Bearcats made it close after Cumberland committed eight errors over the remainder of the set before closing it out at 25-18.
The second set was the closest set of the match as Rust took an early lead before Cumberland tied it at 5-5. Tied at 7-7, Cumberland picked four straight points feeding Camila Martinho for three kills in the run. At 12-10 Cumberland pulled away stretching it out to an eight-point lead before winning the set 25-20.
Rust jumped up early again in the third set getting up as much as 10-5. Cumberland flipped the script of the set taking the next six points to grab a 11-10 lead. Cumberland got up by three at 14-11 before Rust answered with a three point run to tie it at 14-14. Cumberland would go on to go up 18-16 before getting the a point on a service error allowing the Phoenix to end the match on a seven-point run with Galvan serving, just like the match started, 25-16.
The Cumberland setters Manoella Gomes and Nicole Roeder spread the ball around well in the match with no Phoenix having more than seven kills from Haley Mitchell. Gomes posted 17 assists and Roeder picked up 11.
The Phoenix hit .202 in the match with 38 kills.
Cumberland will close the Vipers Sports Academy Classic tomorrow with a tough test against No. 8 Missouri Baptist at 9:00 a.m. central time and 10:00 a.m. local time in Florida.
