Women's Volleyball Wraps up Vipers Sports Academy Classic Saturday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--Cumberland Women's Volleyball wraps up the Vipers Sports Academy Classic with a three set loss to No. 8 Missouri Baptist to finish 2-3 at the event. 

The Spartans played well from the opening serve hitting .274 on the match. Missouri Baptist also served well tacking on 10 aces to Cumberland's one. 

The Phoenix hit well in the first set after having just two attack errors in the set, but had 13 over the next two sets to fall to a .194 hit percentage in the match. Freshman Haley Mitchell and sophomore Hazel Konkel were tied for the team lead in kills with nine a piece. 

Cumberland had 10 total blocks in the match as Kayla Andre had two solos and five assisted to lead the way on the net. 

Missouri Baptist's Gabi Jakubowska finished with a match-high 11 kills and four Spartans each picked up two aces. 

In the first set, Missouri Baptist pulled ahead early using a three-point run to get up 8-4. Cumberland responded with five-straight points on kills from Andre, Lauren Galvan, and Kayla Burbach to take the lead. The Spartans answered right back with a 6-to-1 run to get back up by four at 14-10. Missouri Baptist held the four-point lead to 20-16 before closing out the set to win 25-17.

Missouri Baptist started the second set out with a huge run to get up 8-1 and pushed that out to 12-2. The Phoenix were chasing from behind the rest of the set, but had too much ground to catch up never getting within six on the set. The Spartans took set two by a score of 25-18.

The final set was the biggest battle as Cumberland tried to stay in this match. The third set had six ties and three lead changes in it. The Phoenix lead at 10-8 in the set before MBU went on a 5-1 run to get up by two. The Spartans held the lead within two points to 18-16 before going on a run to lead 22-16. Cumberland rallied back in it to bring it 24-23, but Missouri Baptist got the final point they needed to get the win. 

The loss ends Cumberland's Vipers Sports Academy Classic as they finish 2-3, all three losses came to teams either in the NAIA Top 25 or receiving votes in the preseason polls. 

Cumberland will open up at home on Thursday as the Phoenix will play host in the Phoenix Classic. The classic will be a seven team event running from Thursday, August 24 to Saturday, August 26. CU will have two matches each day.
