Phoenix Drop two on day one of the Phoenix Classic

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland drops both matches on day one of the Phoenix Classic. Cumberland took a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Keiser to kick off the tournament, then fell in a fifth set battle with Fisk. 

Vs. Keiser
Camila Martinho led CU's offensive efforts with ten kills, while Lauren Galvan and Hazel Konkel each added nine. As a team, the Phoenix hit a .183 compared to Keiser's .217. Elaine Shaneyfelt recorded a game-high 12 digs while Nicole Roeder added 22 assists.

The Seahawks were led by Brooklyn Slater with 18 kills and Erika Magin who matched Shaneyfelt's 12 digs. 

Keiser jumped ahead early in the first with a six point scoring spurt, forcing CU to recollect in a timeout. The Phoenix faced a deficit through the middle stages but made it a tightly contested finish with a three point run for a 23-21 game. The Seahawks captured the next two points on a kill and a CU service error for the 25-21 set victory.

Cumberland came out swinging in the second with a 6-0 start, during which Martinho, Konkel, and Kayla Burbach dropped a trio of back-to-back kills. Keiser burned an early timeout but Cumberland added three more points to their lead coming out of it. 

Despite leading by as many as nine, the Phoenix faced a tied game at 13-13 after a huge nine point run by the Seahawks. It was another tight battle to close but Lauren Galvan ended the set in CU's favor with a tough rip from the outside at 25-20.

The teams traded points down the stretch of the third, however the Seahawks were able to create some distance towards the end with a 20-14 score. The Phoenix showed some grit in the final few, heading on a 7-1 run to make it a 23-21 game. The Seahawks capitalized at the net for the last two, closing it out at 25-21 for a 2-1 game.

Set four was another back and forth battle with neither side making a significant break in scoring until Keiser's 7-2 run created some distance at 21-14. The Seahawks ended the set and the match with a 25-16 win.

Vs. Fisk
Cumberland hit a .103 team attack percentage, hitting just below Fisk's .132. Kayla Burbach led the Phoenix with nine kills, while Elaine Shaneyfelt added a career-high and 21 digs. 
The Bulldogs were led defensively by Jadyn Brackins with 24 digs and offensively by Kailynn Johnson with 15 kills. 

The Phoenix were hot out the gate with a big kill from Konkel on the right side, giving them a lead they would protect throughout the entire first set. Cumberland's offense posted a nearly perfect set with 12 kills and only two errors for a .435 team percentage, helping them to a 25-14 win.

It was another strong start for CU in the second as they went on a 6-1 run, ignited by a deep swing from Burbach. 

Despite leading by as many as seven through the middle stages, the Bulldogs cut it close with a four point run during which they recorded an ace and a kill. The Phoenix were quick to recover the points and pushed their lead back out to seven.

The Bulldogs showed some fight in the final few points with a five point spurt, but CU overcame the efforts to come up with a 25-19 win.

Fisk took their first lead of the game in the third with Johnson nailing three kills for the 6-3 lead. The teams traded points down the stretch with no significant leads on either side until Fisk's late set run created some distance for a 23-18 score. The Bulldogs followed that distance straight into a 25-19 win to force a fourth set.

The Bulldogs had all of the energy in the fourth, forcing CU to burn a timeout early at the 8-5 score. Fisk continued to ride their momentum through the set while the Phoenix struggled to get anything going offensively or defensively. The Bulldogs cruised to a 25-16 set win.

The Phoenix cleaned up their play in the fifth to jump to take an early 8-3 advantage, but the Bulldogs fought back hard to make it an even 8-8 game. 

Fisk capitalized on a string of Cumberland errors to pull ahead and ultimately take the set 15-13.

The Phoenix will look to have a better day tomorrow for day two of the tournament, starting with a 3:30 PM match against Madonna University. They will close out tomorrow with a 7:30 game versus William Carey.
