Women's Soccer Withstands Late Charge From Spartans to Win 2-1

St. Louis, Mo. - - Hitting the road for the first time in four games, the Phoenix traveled to face off against Missouri Baptist University. The Spartans mounted a late charge, but Cumberland ultimately cruised to a 2-1 victory.

Cumberland had their foot on the gas straight from kickoff, trying to take MBU out from early on. Putting five shots on goal before the Spartans ever recorded a shot at all, the Phoenix looked comfortable in the attacking third.

After countless attempts at goal, it was Yuna Hazekawa coming up big to break the deadlock. Winning a freekick from just over twenty yards out, Hazekawa delivered a bullet of a shot into the top right corner, leaving little to chance. With the goal she's now scored three times this season, with two coming from free kicks.

Though they had double-digit shots and several on goal, the Phoenix struggled to find their way through the Spartan's strong defense. Taking their lead into the break, Cumberland was ahead but only by a small margin, 1-0.

Mounting pressure from the beginning of the second half, the Phoenix continued to pepper the MBU defense with shots. Linking up for the Phoenix's second goal was Mari Sagstad and Brenna Swiger.

The Spartans defended well in their own half and just as they began to push their defense further up the field, Swiger found Sagstad through on goal. Sagstad took the ball down the right wing and had the whole goal to shoot as she was one on one with the goalkeeper; keeping her head level, she slotted it into the right side of the goal.

Missouri made a late charge, getting a goal in the 87th minute, though it was too little too little as the Phoenix's defense held strong in the final minutes.

With the win the Phoenix have now won four games in a row and will open up conference play this Saturday against Freed-Hardeman. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
