Swiger's Massive Day Leads Phoenix to 13-0 Victory

Lebanon, Tenn. - - Opening their conference season against their in-state rivals, the Phoenix welcomed in the Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman. In what was seemingly this season's greatest offensive display, Cumberland ran away with a 13-0 victory.

From kickoff the Phoenix hounded the Lady Lions defense which led to an early breakthrough. Hardly giving the Cumberland announcers time to gather their breath, Brenna Swiger took the first two shots of the game, scoring both within three minutes.

First, Miku Kayama chipped a ball to the middle of the field from her position on the right wing and Swiger quickly dispatched the ball in the top right corner of the net. In the very next minute of the game Swiger scored from a nearly identical run; it was Lucia Mei finding her this time however.

With an early lead, the Phoenix rotated players earlier than usual and it paid dividends. Though they did not start the game, Evelyn Jimenez and Brenda Cernas both made an impact from the moment they stepped on the field. Substituting in the 24th minute, it took the pair just three minutes to link up and assist Miku Kayama's third goal of the season.

Getting in on the scoring herself next, Cernas carried the ball through the Lion defense and slotted the ball past the keeper. Assisting the goal was another Phoenix substitute, seeing Zoe Collyer put in her fourth assist of the season.

Starting the second half how they ended the first, the Phoenix were dominant from the start. Just over a minute into the second half, Swiger continued her reign from the second half and after putting a shot on goal, Mari Sagstad nabbed the rebound for her first goal of the game.

From that point on, as long as she was on the field, Brenna Swiger was simply too much for the Lady Lions to handle. Before coming off with over twenty minutes to play, she managed three more goals which took her tally to five on the day and when her assist gave her six total goal contributions.

In what became a 13-0 rout for the Phoenix, several players chipped in goals in the second half Ella Tuplin, Marie Bathe, Gabby Jones, and Hailey Burroughs. After 90 minutes were played the Phoenix had outshot the Lions 67-0.

The Phoenix will hope to carry their momentum forward as they have to hit the road to face off against no. 21 ranked Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 26th.
