Phoenix Split Final day of the Liz Hossler Labor Day Classic

Mishawaka, Ind.-- Cumberland splits day two in Mishawaka, with a sweep over IU South Bend and a tough 3-1 loss to No. 16 Bethel.

Vs. IU South Bend
Cumberland had a better start to the second day of the classic with a 3-0 sweep of IU South Bend. Lauren Galvan led the CU attackers with nine kills, followed by Hazel Konkel with eight on a .571 attack percentage. Nicole Roeder recorded a double-double with 15 assists and ten digs.
The Phoenix took an early lead with a trio of aces from Sydney Pearce to separate themselves from the Knights. The Titans struggled to get into an offensive rhythm with a -.056 team attack percentage, helping CU to cruise to a 25-16 lead.
Cumberland had their best attack outing of the tournament in the second, hitting a .365 with 15 kills and only three errors. The pressure kept IU South Bend at bay through the entire set, with Konkel earning the final two points on a block and a kill.
The Titans fought hard to force a fourth, taking their first lead of the game midway through the third set at 11-9. The Phoenix recovered efficiently with back-to-back kills from Konkel to regain momentum. Swings from Galvan and Kayla Andre ended the set and the game in CU's favor 25-21. 

Vs. No. 16 Bethel (Ind.)
Lauren Galvan led CU with 13 kills, hitting fantastic .400. Layla Young also had a solid match with ten kills and two blocks. Nicole Roeder posted another double-double with 26 assists and a team-high 15 digs.
The Phoenix were unstoppable at the net in the first with 16 kills and only two errors, propelling them to a 25-23 victory. Galvan nailed all of her attempts in the set, going 5-for-5 from the outside. 
Cumberland showed some defensive struggle in the second, allowing the Pilots to open with a 5-0 lead. Bethel held down the advantage for the remainder of the set, recording four blocks and 15 kills to win 25-21. 
The Titans had everything going their way in the third with a dominant 25-12 win. They posted their best offensive stats in the game with a .333 team percentage, while Cumberland was unable to get into a groove.
The teams traded blows down the stretch of the fourth, but the Titans were ultimately able to come out on top with six less attack errors than CU. Bethel pulled out a close 25-23 win to keep a clean record.
The Phoenix will be back on the court next Tuesday for a 5 pm match against Bryan College.
