Cumberland Women's Volleyball Handles Bryan College in Four

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Four Phoenix attackers post double-digit figures to win a difficult four set battle over Bryan College.
Lauren Galvan led Cumberland's offense with 16 kills while also adding nine digs. Camila Martinho was solid throughout, recording 13 kills and hitting a fantastic .364. Nicole Roeder posted another double-double with 22 assists and ten digs.
The Lions were led by Abby Rector who put up 16 kills and Elliot Brock with a game-high 24 digs.
The Phoenix were plagued by attacking errors to start the first, allowing the Lions to go on a 6-0 run. Gomes ended the scoring drought, winning a joust at the net to send CU on a 10-2 spurt.
The teams traded runs through the middle phases, resulting in a 21-21 tied match. In the final push, Galvan delivered two blows from the outside to give CU the 25-22 win.
Cumberland had a much better start to the second while the Lions struggled to get into a rhythm. The Phoenix attackers established themselves early and posted a nearly clean sheet with 12 kills and only three errors.
Cumberland led by as many as 12 but were stunned by a 7-1 Lions run that cut the difference down to six. After recollecting in a timeout, CU cleaned up their side and earned a dominant 25-14 victory.
The Lions were determined to avoid the sweep, posting the strongest team attack percentage of the game by either side at .302.
The teams went back and fourth down the stretch with Bryan answering back to all of CU's scoring spurts with scrappy defensive moves.
High intensity plays on both sides saw the game into extra points, but a pair of Cumberland errors at the net sent it into a fourth set at 30-28.
With much to prove on either side of the court, both backlines left little room for attackers to find the floor. It was a back and forth fight through the middle stages of set four with neither team leading by more than two.
Tied at 22-22, Hazel Konkel put the Phoenix up with a kill and Bryleigh Yarbough backed it up with an ace. Galvan made the decisive blow, giving CU the homecourt victory at 25-23.
The Phoenix will be back in Indiana- this time in the Upland area- for a weekend tournament starting on September 8. All of the action kicks off at 10 AM against Roosevelt University.
