Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Comes out on top in Their First Home Conference Match

Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland women's volleyball earns their first home conference win of the season, taking down the Bethel Wildcats in five exciting sets.
The Phoenix moved to a 2-0 conference record with the help of Lauren Galvan's 16 kills and Layla Young's 13. Libero Kaleigh Glass was solid from start to finish, totaling a game-high of 22 digs.
Between the two teams, 27 service errors were committed to make for a back-and-forth effort through all sets. The teams battled tightly all throughout, making Cumberland's 15-11 fifth set victory all the more satisfying.
The Phoenix found an early advantage in the first with a 6-2 lead and protected as the set played out. They led by as many as six at 20-16 until a series of errors at the net gave Bethel a second life as they headed on a 6-2 run of their own.
The teams traded blows in the final push, forcing the game into extra points but the kill from Young would end it in CU's favor at 28-26.
Set two played out in a similar fashion with Cumberland leading down the stretch and Bethel cutting it close with a late-game push. With a tie at 21-21, the Wildcats committed four errors in the final few points to allow CU to lead 2-0.
Determined to avoid the sweep, the Wildcats took the first lead of set four and held it down until Cumberland's 5-1 run evened out the score at 14-14. From there, it was a tightly contested race to finish.
With a 23-23 tie, the Phoenix were beaten by their own errors as the Wildcats stayed alive with a 25-23 win.
Cumberland faced an uphill battle through the entire fourth set as the Wildcats posted their best team attack percentage of the game at .175. The Phoenix struggled to get into a solid groove until the set was nearing the end, but a kill from Bethel's Alex Mclaren would end it in their favor 25-23.
The teams were neck-and-neck in the deciding set until Galvan's three point service run created a comfortable distance at 14-10. The Wildcats recollected in a timeout that was effective in getting the ball back, but a miscommunication error gave Cumberland the victory.
The Phoenix will be back at home on Monday, September 25 when they host the Georgetown Tigers for a 6 pm match.
