Cockrill nets 29 points in Cumberland's 79-74 Win over Campbellsville

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland overcomes an eight-point deficit in the second half on the back of Doyel Cockrill III's 29 points to snap a six game losing streak against Campbellsville, 79-74.

Cumberland (5-11, 1-1 MSC) played their only home game in the month of January and overcame adverse moments to grab the win over the Tigers. The Phoenix shot 45.6% from the field and knocked down seven triples, five from Cockrill. CU forced Campbellsville into 17 turnovers that translated to 20 points for the Phoenix. 

Cockrill had a career night with 29 points, the most of his freshman season and first 20-point game of his career. Cockrill went 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from deep. He also added six points from the free throw line. Demarius Boyd added 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and six rebounds. The two combined for 44 points for Cumberland. 

Triston Conger scored seven points with five from the line, Matthew Stokes added five points, and Keyshawn Robinson scored three with eight boards, a team-high, for the rest of Cumberland's starting five. 

Kamarie Coffey and Julio Pascual played big minutes off the bench for the Phoenix. Coffey added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and three boards. Pascual scored seven with four rebounds in 16 minutes. 

Campbellsville (12-4, 0-2 MSC) shot 46.0% from the field and added five triples. The Tigers made 23-of-28 free throws in the contest and 17-of-20 in the second half. 

Jace Wallace was the leading scorer for Campbellsville with 14 points and eight rebounds. Cobe Penny added 12 points and seven boards, Cameron Willis scored 12 points off the bench on three triples, and Darius Harding posted 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. 

The Phoenix jumped out to a quick lead after scoring on their first three possessions down the floor.  Cumberland got Stokes going with the first basket followed by a jumper from Boyd and a reverse lay-in from Robinson forcing Campbellsville into a timeout.

Cumberland kept the momentum going with a three from Cockrill out of the break stretching it to a 9-0 lead before the Tigers got on the scoreboard. Cumberland kept the run going after two free throws from Campbellsville, Stokes added two more and Cockrilled drilled a deep three for a 14-2 lead after four minutes of play. 

Campbellsville scored the first basket from the field to spark a 5-0 spurt, but Cockrill ended it with his third three of the first eight minutes of the game to bring us to the first media lead 17-7.

Out of the stoppage, the Tigers went on another 8-2 run with threes from Cameron Willis and Cobe Penny to cut it to 19-15 with nine minutes left in the half. 

Cumberland responded with two straight buckets from Boyd to get it back to an eight point lead, but Campbellsville answered right back with two straight buckets. After the 4-0 spurts, the game would get into a flow of back-and-forth action to the second media with Cumberland leading 27-23 with 5:29 left in the half. 

After the media, Campbellsville went on a 9-2 stretch to take their first lead of the game at 31-29. Brown hit a three from the corner to give the Tigers the lead. 

Down 33-30, Boyd drilled a triple to tie the game, but Campbellsville would hit the final shot of the half for a 35-33 lead at the break. 

Cockrill scored quickly to tie the game after the half, but a 4-0 run for Campbellsville pushed it out to 39-35. Boyd converted an and one to get it back to a one-point game before 5-0 swing for the Tigers gave Campbellsville a 44-38 lead. 

Cumberland came back with a 6-2 run on four points from Triston Conger, his first points of the game and a basket from Julio Pascual to get back within two. Campbellsville went on another 6-0 run with a three, a basket, and a free throw. Coffey drained a three from the wing and Cumberland took a timeout after down by five 52-47 with 10 minutes to play.

Coffey made another play with a steal leading to a transition basket. Two plays later, Cockrill stepped into a three and laced it to tie the game at 52-52 forcing Campbellsville into a timeout with 8:16 left.  

Tied at 63-63 after back and forth play, Pascual went to the line on two consecutive trips making the first three. He missed the fourth attempt, but Coffey had a big offensive board and putback for a 5-0 swing.
Cumberland would hold on the final two minutes of the game, knocking down their free throws to get the 79-74 win and move to 1-1 in Mid-South Conference play. 

The Phoenix will travel to the 12th-ranked University of the Cumberlands on Thursday. Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m. central time.
