Cumberland Women's Volleyball blocked their way to a four set victory against Bethel

LEBANON, TENN.-- Cumberland Women's Volleyball blocked their way to a four set victory against Bethel.

Three Phoenix combined for a total of 35 kills, Lila Cade with 13, Alei Roper with 12, and Haley Mitchell with 10. 

Hazel Konkel had an outstanding night recording 15 blocks, and 11 block assists, along with five kills recording 14.5 points. 

Morgan Snead led CU in the service aces column with four. Elaine Shaneyfelt led in digs with 18. 

Alei Roper also had an outstanding night, along with her season high 12 kills, she recorded an impressive .435 hitting percentage. She also recorded a career high blocks with four. 


The Phoenix got off to a hot start jumping up 3-0 to start set one led by a Hazel Konkel block. Bethel answered back with an 8-0 run to lead CU 10-4.  The Phoenix went on a 5-0 run to bring it within one point at 10-9 until a couple of service errors by the Phoenix. Cumberland fought back and forth and got it tied at 16-16. The Phoenix went on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead at 20-18. Alei Roper set the tone with a massive kill for the Phoenix to extend the lead 22-19. The Wildcats fought back from being down five to bringing it back within one at 24-23 with the Phoenix leading. The Phoenix end up taking set one 25-23 after a service error by the Wildcats.

The Phoenix start set two on a 7-0 run led by two service aces from Emma Chavers. A tone-setting kill by Lila Cade put the Phoenix up 9-3. The Wildcats fought hard to comeback and brought it within three at 10-7. A set of big time kills by Haley Mitchell and Konkel extended the lead for the Phoenix 14-8. After another big kill by Cade, the Phoenix lead 20-15. CU had a couple of errors to shrink the lead 20-17 but bounced back immediately leading 22-18. The Wildcats began the comeback after a couple of kills and attacking errors. The Wildcats trailed by only one at 23-22. It was quickly tied at 24 a piece after a couple of errors by both teams. The Phoenix answered back and went on to win set two 27-25 after escaping a big comeback by the WIldcats.

Set three started back and forth with Lila Cade three of CU's four points, recording three kills. Both teams tied it back and forth until a couple of attack errors by the Wildcats which put the Phoenix ahead 8-6. Konkel and Roper set the tone with a huge block to lead 10-8. Bethel tied it at 10-10 before a service error and the Phoenix were back ahead by one. Cumberland held the biggest lead of the third set, leading 17-13 led by a kill from Roper. Out of a timeout, Bethel went on a small run to tie the game, Cumberland went on a small run after the tie and went ahead by two at 20-18. BU tied it back at 20 all to try and force a fourth set. The Wildcats tied it again at 24 all until a Haley Mitchell kill put them in front 25-24. After a series of back and forth ties and Bethel shaving four match points, the Wildcats forced set four 30-28. 

After a wild set three, the Phoenix started set four on a 8-0 run led by huge kills from Mitchell and Roper. Cade and Roper led the Phoenix to another small run with tone-setting kills again in the fourth set to extend the lead 13-8. The Phoenix went on a 8-0 run to extend the lead even further and push the score to 21-9. The fourth set was dominated by Cumberland who went on to win the fourth and final set 25-13. 

The Phoenix will be back in action Tuesday, Oct. 15 against Oakland City University here in Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
