Women's Volleyball fight off the comeback and defeat Oakland City (3-2)

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland Women's Volleyball fight off the comeback to defeat Oakland City University in five sets (3-2)

Three Phoenix accounted for double-digit kills; Haley Mitchell with 15, Hazel Konkel with 10, and Lila Cade also with 10. The three combined for a total of 35 kills.

Konkel led in the hitting percentage column with an impressive .600. Manoella Gomes led in assists with 26. Morgan Snead also had an impressive game leading the Phoenix with four service aces. 

Set one started in favor of Cumberland jumping to a 5-1 lead against Oakland City. The starting lead was led by last week's Defender of the Week, Hazel Konkel with a kill. Attack errors hurt the Might Oaks, starting set one with five to give the Phoenix a 8-4 lead. Haley Mitchell extended the lead for the Phoenix with a huge kill to secure the biggest lead of set one at 14-7. CU quickly jumped ahead by 10 after another attacking error by the Might Oaks. Oakland City brought it back within five at 20-15 after a couple of errors by the Phoenix. The Mighty Oaks fought hard to comeback being down by eight but a tone-setting kill by Lila Cade and a huge block by Manoella Gomes led the Phoenix to a set one victory 25-20.

The second set started on a 3-0 run by the Phoenix which included an Emma Chavers service ace. The Mighty Oaks immediately fought back and went on a 6-0 run to go ahead of CU 6-3. A block by Konkel alongside an attacking error by the Mighty Oaks got the Phoenix back in position. Cumberland went on a 5-0 run out of a timeout to secure the lead 9-8. The Phoenix went on another 5-0 run to make the score 12-8. A kill by Gomes sparked another Phoenix run and put the phoenix ahead by six, but Oakland City fought back and brought it back within three until the Mighty Oaks committed yet another attack error. A huge kill from Mitchell gave CU an extended lead at 20-15. Oakland City went on a 4-0 run to a score of 20-19 with the Phoenix in the lead but a Konkel kill and an attack error put the Phoenix ahead 22-19. Oakland City erased the deficit of a five point lead by the Phoenix tying the score 24-24. The Phoenix finished the match scoring two consecutive points to win set two 26-24.

The third set started with a tone-setting kill once again by Konkel. Oakland City gained a quick lead, leading CU by three points at 6-3. Oakland City went on a couple of runs to extend their lead on the Phoenix 12-7. Cumberland went on a 5-0 run led by a service ace from Morgan Snead to bring the score within one to try and defeat Oakland City in three sets. The Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to put CU ahead 17-15. It was back and forth until Konkel set the tone with a kill to lead by two at 20-18. The Mighty Oaks fought back and tied it at 21 a piece until a service error which gave the Phoenix back the lead 22-21. After a series of five different ties after point 20, Oakland CIty finished set three with a victory to force set four. 

Set four started out back and forth with a series of four different ties and lead changes. The Mighty Oaks went on a 6-0 run to take the lead over the Phoenix 9-4. Oakland City kept their momentum and went ahead of the Phoenix 15-6 after a series of errors. The OCU went on a 3-0 run to lead the Phoenix by 10 at 18-8 in set four. CU went on a 6-0 run to bring them back within five at 18-13. OCU went on another small run to strengthen to lead 21-14. The Mighty Oaks went on a 3-0 run to win set four 25-15 and force a set five.  

Set five started with a massive kill by Haley Mitchell. The Phoenix jumped ahead 4-1 but the Mighty Oaks fought back and went ahead of the Phoenix 5-4 after a small run. CU went on a 3-0 run later and made the score 8-7 to give them the lead. After a bad set by the Phoenix, the final set was tied at 9-9. A huge kill by Mitchell put the Phoenix in the driver's seat 10-9. After another tie and an ace for the Might Oaks, the Phoenix tied it back up at 11-11 by a kill from Freshman Lila Cade. CU bounced back after another lead change and went on a three point run to beat Oakland City University in five sets by a score of 15-13 and (3-2).

The Phoenix will be back in action on October 22 in  Columbia, Ky. against Lindsey Wilson at 7:00 PM.
