Phoenix Knock Off No. 4 Bethel to Cap Homecoming Weekend with a 21-14 Win

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland football knocks off No. 4 Bethel with a big team effort to win 21-14 on Hall of Fame and Homecoming weekend.

The Phoenix (5-1, 1-1 MSC) took down a Top 5 opponent for the first time since 2018. Cumberland came out and were physical from the opening kick, never trailing in the game. The Phoenix collected nearly 100 yards more on offense than Bethel, having another great game on the ground going for 248 and adding 136 in the air. The Phoenix had the ball for over 38 minutes of game clock controlling the clock in the contest.

Quarterback Luke Holloway played a complete game, completing 10-of-18 passes for 136 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for 96 yards and a score. Jeremiah Bryant added 100 yards on the ground, his second game this season over 100 yards, with one touchdown. Isaiah O'Neal caught two passes for 55 yards and a score. Carson Posch and Jacob Cornejo each made two grabs as well and Kaiden Hatchett hauled in three passes.

The defense played stingy today holding Bethel's offense to just 268 yards. The Wildcats did most of their damage rushing the football as they went for 200 yards on the ground with just 68 passing yards.

It was a complete team effort defensively as everyone played well today. Boston Follis and Cannon Johnson led the team in tackles with six each, Johnson added a sack and a pass break up. Derek Taylor had five tackles and two break ups and Jalen Brown had four up front for CU.

The first quarter was back and forth stops for both sides. The Wildcats started with the ball and were forced to punt on the opening drive. The Phoenix drove down field inside the 50-yard line, but Bethel forced a turnover on downs on a drive that chewed up a lot of clock. Bethel then returned the favor with a six minute long drive that Cumberland forced a turnover on downs to end the first.

Cumberland took their first drive in the second quarter down the field into plus territory. The Phoenix elected to try a 39-yard field goal that Jack Kantner just missed wide right to keep the score at 0-0.

The Phoenix defense stood tall on the next Bethel drive and forced a punt into the endzone. Cumberland then chewed up eight minutes of clock on a 14-play drive that ended in the endzone. Holloway threw a perfect ball to the back shoulder of O'Neal who made a tough catch for a 13-yard touchdown catch and 7-0 lead with 2:46 left.

Bethel started with good field position after a penalty pushed the kickoff back. Bethel drove 46-yards down the field to score a touchdown on Ben Nixon's five-yard pass to Shawne Jones to level the game at halftime, 7-7.

Cumberland received the opening kick in the second half and first play from scrimmage Bryant took the hand off 31-yards to kick start a big second half. The Phoenix continued to drive down the field as Bryant capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush for 14-7 lead with 10:56 left in the third.

After a few quick possessions, the Phoenix took back over with five minutes left in the third. Cumberland chewed up the rest of the clock in the quarter driving 74 yards down the field. Holloway scampered around the outside for a six-yard touchdown rush and two score lead up 21-7 going into the fourth.

Bethel was forced to punt on the opening drive of the fourth quarter. The Phoenix were inside their own 25-yard line and forced to punt, but Cumberland elected to try for a fake punt on a 4th and 1 call and did not convert it, setting up a short field for Bethel. The Wildcats would wind up punching in a one-yard touchdown rush from Kade Hewitt to make it interesting at 21-14 with 10:39 left to play.

Cumberland chewed up five minutes of clock before having to punt it back Bethel. Second play of the drive Jordan Cason got loose for a 43-yard rush, but the defense bowed their neck shut down the next four plays to force a turnover on downs with 3:21 left.

The Phoenix ran the clock out and burned the rest of the Wildcats timeouts including a challenge on a third down play that Holloway scampered for 12 yards to convert the sticks. The Phoenix kneed out the rest of the clock to knock off No. 4 Bethel, 21-14.

The road doesn't get any easier as CU will play host to No. 17 Georgetown next week at Nokes-Lasater. Kick-off will take place at 1:30 p.m.
