Women's Soccer Fall to No. 1 Patriots After Going a Player Down

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The Cumberland Women's Soccer team fell in a tough match-up against the No. 1 ranked Cumberlands Patriots.

In a rematch of last season's Mid-South Conference Championship game, the Phoenix came back to Williamsburg with the hopes of taking down the Patriots on their home turf again. From the start of the game it looked like it would be a classic battle of the two giants, seeing two shots on goal form Gabby Jones in the opening minutes, while UC also challenged the CU net.

It took the Patriots 15 minutes to record their first shot but despite the Phoenix's strong defense, a diving header from Jayden Boelter put the Cumberlands ahead in the 18th minute. The Phoenix responded with several shots of their own to run out the half, while UC didn't manage another shot for the remaining thirty minutes.

Coming out of the break the Phoenix looked a side rejuvenated, holding the ball better than they did for much of the first half, but nine minutes in disaster struck. After several minutes of conversation between the linesman and center official, the officials decided to give Celia Rodriguez a straight red card, as well as the Patriots a free-kick right on the edge of the box.

With that free kick the Cumberlands put a well placed spot kick in the bottom right corner and doubled their lead. Now playing a woman down, Cumberland had to do everything they could to break out of the Patriots strong press, while also covering ground defensively when they had to.

Naturally, playing with an extra player on the field led to the Patriots gaining a sense of confidence and they put one more in the back of the net to make it a 3-0 game. Cumberland didn't roll over however, registering three more shots in the half and playing overall excellent defense against the No. 1 team in the NAIA.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Wednesday where they will face off against the Bethel Wildcats.
