Campbellsville Pulls Away in Fourth to drop Phoenix, 27-14

CAMPBELLSVILLe, Ky.--The Phoenix and Tigers were locked in a battle deadlocked at 14-14, but the Tigers scored a touchdown in the fourth and then sealed the deal with a pick six to come away with a 27-14 win in the conference opener.

The game was everything it was called to be until a couple of costly mistakes cost the Phoenix late. Cumberland (4-1, 0-1 MSC) had over 300 yards running for 190. Quarterback Luke Holloway completed 10-of-18 passes for one touchdown and two picks. Jarrius Rogers had two scores one on the ground and one receiving. Jacob Cornejo led the team in rushing with 66 yards on nine carries. Holloway had 64 yards on the ground also.

Boston Follis led the team in tackles with six with a forced fumble on a sack. Dez Wallace posted three tackles with two sacks and a fumble recovery. Cannon Johnson had five tackles and Joey Samples and Jalen Brown each had four.

Campbellsville (6-0, 1-0 MSC) had 345 yards of total offense led by quarterback Jagger Gillis. Gillis threw for 259 yards on 22-of-34 passing for three touchdowns. The Tigers added in 81 rushing yards as a team led by 70 from CA Collins. Ashton Auker caught eight passes for 106 yards and Like Sheperson caught four passes for 15 yards and two scores.

Cumberland received the opening kick after losing the toss. The Phoenix went three-and-out on their opening possession punting it away, but the Cumberland defense answered the bell to force a punt with a huge sack on third down by Dez Wallace

The Phoenix took advantage with the momentum and drove the ball 59-yard to get in the endzone. The drive was capped with Jarrius Rogers second rushing touchdown of the season, a 12-yard rush around the edge for the 7-0 lead where the score would stand at the end of the first.

Cumberland drove down the field to start the second quarter, but the drive stalled out in the red zone with Tigers forcing a turnover on downs with a big fourth down stop. The Tigers used that momentum to go 75-yards down the field capped off with a six-yard touchdown pass from Gillis to Siler to tie the game at 7-7.

The next Phoenix drive, Cumberland was moving the ball well down the field, but after an 11-yard rush, Holloway fumbled the ball and the Tigers took over possession on their own 28-yard line. The Phoenix defense again got the Tigers off the field after three plays to allow the offense to take over with 3:25 left in the half.

CU moved the ball across the 50, but on a 4th and 1 situation with less than 1:30 left, CU elected to punt and Nolan Gottlied pinned the Tigers inside the five.

Campbellsville would move the chains a time or two, but ultimately punted and the Phoenix would take a knee to send us to half deadlocked at 7-7.

WIth 6;57 left in the third quarter, the Phoenix turned to freshman running back Jacob Cornejo and he sparked the Cumberland offense. He busted out a 41-yard rush to get into plus territory. A few plays later, Holloway threw a 27-yard touchdown strike to Rogers to give Cumberland a 14-7 lead with 3:18 left.

The Tigers started the ensuing drive on the 35 after the kick off went out of bounds and went the distance to tie the game. Gillis found Auker over the top for 33-yards all the way to the Cumberland one-yard line. The Phoenix forced a few plays on the goalline, but Gillis eventually found Sheperson for a one-yard touchdown with seconds left in the third to tie the contest at 14-14.

Cumberland went three-and-out on the first drive of the fourth and Campbellsville continued with the momentum. Gillis threw a 35-yard pass to Patrick Oden for 35 yards to set up a first and goal. Again, CU forced a few plays out of the Tigers, but they again found Luke Sheperson for a one-yard touchdown for the lead, 21-14 with 9:46 left.

The Phoenix went three and out again on their next possession, but the defense came up with a big stop to give Cumberland a chance. The Tigers used Gillis to punt on a fourth down situation and he pinned it on the one-yard line with 6:01 left.

Cumberland worked out of the shadows of their own endzone and moved the ball downfield, but Holloway threw a pass to Carson Posch that got tipped up and intercepted by DQ Brown for a 27-yard pick six to seal the game.

The Phoenix tried to get something going down field in the closing minutes and Holloway threw his second interception of the game trying to find a player in the endzone.

Cumberland will be back in action next Saturday back at home against No. 5 Bethel for homecoming. Kick-off will start at 1:30 p.m. central time.
