Freed-Hardeman Sweeps Phoenix on the Road

HENDERSON, Tenn.--Cumberland drops their fifth consecutive conference match at Freed-Hardeman as the Lady Lions sweep the Phoenix. 

Cumberland (15-13, 2-5 MSC) starts to make their way back across the conference opponents with this match at Freed-Hardeman. The Phoenix picked up a 3-0 sweep in the conference opener at home, but Freed-Hardeman returned the favor on the road in Henderson.

The Phoenix struggled on serve receive today to allow the Lady Lions to capitalize from their misplay to get up early and often. Freed-Hardeman notched 10 aces and held the Phoenix to a .064 hitting percentage on the night. Hazel Konkel led the team in kills with six while Emma Chavers had 14 assist and Ella Johnson had 11 digs on the back row for her first-career double-figure digs match at CU.

Freed-Hardeman (12-12, 1-6 MSC) earned the first conference victory this season posting 35 kills on a .274 hit percentage. Audrey Orton had 14 kills hitting .387. Alyssa Austin had 28 assists and Charley Fulton and Alanys Ruis Rivera each had double-figure dig matches at 12 and 10. 

The Lady Lions got up big and in a hurry in set one. After 12 points Freed-Hardeman had an eight point lead up 10-2. The Lions extended the lead to 10 at 14-4 and went on a 7-2 run to end the set with a big 25-10 set victory. 

The second set was the most competitive of the match. The set was tied at 7-7 when the Lions went on a 4-0 and left Cumberland trying to catch up the rest of the set. The Phoenix got within a point down 15-14, but the Lady Lions went on a 5-1 run to create some separation before winning the set 25-21. 

Freed-Hardeman rattled off the first four points of the set in the third, but Cumberland would rally back to tie the set at 8-8, but after that the Lady Lions went on a 7-1 run and never looked back, winning the set 25-14 and sweeping the Phoenix. 

Cumberland will be back in action at home on Thursday as CU will take on Bethel at 7:00 p.m.
