Cumberland Advances to MSC Finals after Thrilling Shootout Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.--Cumberland Women's Soccer advances to the Mid-South Conference Championship after defeating Campbellsville 5-4 in penalty kicks.

The Phoenix return to the Mid-South Conference finals seeking to defend their title against top-ranked Cumberlands on Wednesday. Cumberland and Campbellsville were deadlocked at 0-0 after 110 minutes of play. The match went to penalties marking the first-ever penalty kicks match in Cumberland Women's Soccer history.

Cumberland went first in penalties as Ao Yamada confidently converted the opening attempt, giving the Phoenix an early lead. Campbellsville's Erin Riden stepped up next but missed, putting the ball over the crossbar. Marta Martin followed with a successful strike, while Campbellsville's Miti Yoshitake Rosch kept her team in the contest by scoring. Seika Ikezoe added another goal for Cumberland, and Marta Prieto answered for Campbellsville to keep the gap narrow.

Grace Morris calmly made her shot for Cumberland, matched by Paula Sanabria's conversion for Campbellsville. Kaylie Torrens stepped up and her shot saved to open the door for Campbellsville to send it to sudden death. Lina Berrah scored for Campbellsville to level the pressure.

Now in sudden death, Celia Rodriguez delivered for Cumberland giving the Phoenix a chance to move on with a Tigers miss. Campbellsville stepped up to the spot and Celia Martin dove to her left to make the stop and send Cumberland to the finals for the second-straight year.

During regulation, the match was a grind for both sides. In the first half, neither side could create any good opportunities to get a goal. The entirety of the first half saw four shots combined by both teams with none of them being on goal.

Cumberland had the first real threat early in the second half as Kadisha Martina got loose in the box. She fired a shot, but it rattled off the post in the 46th minute.

Five minutes later, the Tigers Lina Berrah fired their first shot on goal that Martin saved.

The Phoenix had another pair of looks in the 75th minute. The Phoenix played the ball over the top and Martina ended up behind the back line. She fired a shot that Milly Shakespear saved and the rebound went right to Seika Ikezoe. She took another shot off the rebound and Shakespear made another incredible save to keep the game level at 0-0.

Those two shots were the last real chances for either side in regulation to send it to overtime.

The first overtime was much of the same with both teams fending off attacks, but the second overtime period saw the Tigers on the offensive. Campbellsville had three looks, one in the 106th minute, one in the 107th minute, and one in the 108th minute. Cumberland was fortunate that none of them found the back of the net to survive the period and go to the shootout.
The Phoenix then won in penalties to move on to the Mid-South Conference Championship for the second-straight season.

Cumberland will take on No. 1 ranked University of the Cumberlands in a rematch of last year's conference finals on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. central time/6:00 p.m. local time in Williamsburg.
