Bethel Runs Away from Phoenix in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind.--Jaylin Anglin and Demarius Boyd went for 24 and 21 points a piece, but RV Bethel got an early lead and never looked back, beating the Phoenix 102-86.

Cumberland (0-4) struggled from the field in the first half and built themselves too big of a hole to climb out of in the second half. The Phoenix finished the game going 31-for-65 (47.7%) from the field and added six triples. Cumberland went 18-for-27 from the charity stripe.

Jaylin Anglin scored 24 points going 9-for14 from the field and 3-of-5 from deep. Demarius Boyd had 21 points adding 10 points from the free throw line. Triston Conger was the only other Phoenix in double-figures posting 13 points. Khi Wallace led the team in rebounds with nine boards.

Bethel (5-0) had a strong start and kept their foot on the throttle in the second half. The Pilots shot 50.9% from the field (29-57) and made eight three-pointers, six in the first half. Bethel made their way to the free throw line 48 times making 36 of them. The Pilots also outrebounded the Phoenix 43-to-28.

Bethel had four players in double-figures led by Jameir Jefferson with 25 points. Luke McBride, Preston Phillips, and Alona Peciulus each added in 18 points. Peciulus also had nine rebounds to lead the team.

The Phoenix came out slow in this one and had to battle back into it early. The Pilots knocked down back-to-back threes to start the game before Conger hit the first shot for CU. Bethel continued the early lead to build it up to 9-2 after the first four minutes.

Trailing 15-9, still down by six, Luke McBride drained a triple to give Bethel a nine point lead up 18-9. Cumberland went on 6-2 run as Boyd got going knocking down two jumpers and Robinson made a layup to cut it to a five point game at 11:02 left. After two free throws for the Pilots, Wallace answered with a lay up to go into the first media timeout trailing 22-17.

Out of the media, the Phoenix fell ice cold going scoreless for over four minutes of game time. During that stretch, Bethel went on a 13-0 run making 10 free throws on the stretch and one three from McBride to push the score out to 35-17.

Nick Brunetti finally ended the drought with a free throw. Jaylin Anglin got going for Cumberland scoring their next seven points making two layups and a three, but Bethel continued to score, leading 43-25 with 3:56 left at the second media.

Bethel continued to shoot well out of the timeout outscoring CU the rest of the half 10-3 in the final four minutes to take a big 53-28 lead at the half. Bethel went to the line 19 times in the first half making 15 of them while shooting 59.3% from the field and going 6-of-10 threes.

The Pilots held on to the 25-point lead playing to 70-45 score after the first seven minutes of the second half. Bethel continued to keep the gap at 20+ points pushing it to their largest lead at 98-69. Cumberland finished the game on a high-note with a 17-4 run to cut the final score to 102-86.
