The Phoenix Fall Short on the Road Against Midway University

MIDWAY, Ky.— The Phoenix fall short on the road against Midway University. 

Demarius Boyd led the Phoenix in scoring with 19 points and four assists. Triston Conger, Joshua Johnson, and Keyshawn Robinson all combined for two steals a piece for a total of six. Khi Wallace, Boyd, Anglin, and Conger all combined for double digits in the points column. 

Cumberland shot 53.3% from the field and 25% from the three line. The Phoenix attempted 18 free-throws and made 11 for a 61% FT percentage. 

The Phoenix got off to a slow start against Midway University after turning the ball over in the opening two possessions of the game while Midway led 4-0. Midway went on a run knocking down a couple of threes to lead the Phoenix 12-8 with 14 minutes left in the first half. Demarius Boyd hit a three to bring CU within one at 14-13. Cumberland took their first lead of the game after a made free throw by Eliot Harrison to lead 16-15. The Eagles answered back by going straight down the next possession and hitting a jumper. The Phoenix scored two possessions in a row to bring it back within two points after the Eagles went on a 8-0 run and with five minutes left until the half the Eagles led 30-28. 

At the half the Phoenix trailed by 12 with a score of 46-34. Cumberland was led at the half by Boyd who had 11 points shooting 4-7 from the field and 1-1 from three. As a team the Phoenix shot 47% from the field and 14% from behind the arc. Baqi Lecky and Jalen Anglin both trail Boyd with six points a piece at the half. 

The Phoenix and the Eagles traded possessions for the first five minutes of the second half keeping the score differential around 12 to 13 points. Anglin came out shooting, recording five points early in the second half. The Eagles increased the lead to the largest of the day at 14. Cumberland fought back and brought it within 8 points late in the second half led by Boyd scoring a seven point run alongside Khi Wallace who jumped to 12 points. The Phoenix led them get away again and then they brought it right back to a seven point game. The Eagles went on a five-nothing run to extend their lead back to 12 points which was led by Decoreio Smith and Travontae Smith. The Phoenix couldn't hold onto the runs and fell short 89-78 against Midway University. 

The Phoenix will be back in action against Dalton State College Nov. 18 at 7:00 PM in Dalton, Ga.
