Women's Basketball Fight Off Spartans for Second Win

HENDERSON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team picked up their second win of the season on Saturday as they split their weekend at the Freed-Hardeman Invitational.

If you are a fan of defense then this was the game for you to watch as the Phoenix shut down Missouri Baptist in both quarters of the first half, allowing just 15 total points in that time! Ever Walker led the way offensively with 9 points and a handful of rebounds in the first half, while Cumberland were stalwarts on the defensive end, allowing just a single shot from the field in a dominant run in the second quarter.

The third quarter was all Phoenix again as the Spartans hardly hit double-figures, a number nearly matched by the period's effort from Kayla Gordon. The senior scored 8 points and missed just a single shot all period, a testament to her game-wrecking ability. Missouri Baptist attempted a late comeback charge as they finally put more points on the board than the Phoenix did in the fourth, though it was too little too late.

In what was one of the best defensive performances the Phoenix will see all year, they forced 25 turnovers while grabbing 13 steals. Had Cumberland been able to convert on more of their chances over the course of the game there were moments it could have gotten out of hand, going ahead by as many as 24 points in the third quarter.

Cumberland will have a quick turnaround as they take on Life University in Marietta, Georgia this coming Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM on November 20th.
