Blue Raiders Capitalize on CU Mistakes to down Phoenix 20-17 on Senior Day

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland football had too many blunders to get past Lindsey Wilson falling 20-17 on Senior Day at Nokes-Lasater.

Cumberland (6-3, 2-3 MSC) had some big mistakes and still had a chance to win the football game. CU had a costly blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and a missed field goal and a penalty that wiped a touchdown off the board and caused CU to settle for a field goal instead.

Despite all the negatives, Cumberland still went for 378 yards of total offense including 231 on the ground. Luke Holloway completed 10-of-20 passes for 147 yards throwing one touchdown and one interception. He was also the leading rusher picking up 86 yards. Jeremiah Bryant had 10 carries for 67 yards and Jacob Cornejo had 47 yards rushing and one touchdown. Isaiah O'Neal had four catches for 44 yards and Jarrius Rogers caught two passes for one touchdown.

Defensively, Trevon Dangerfield led  the team with seven tackles. Derek Taylor and Kion Threalkill each had six. Cannon Johnson had an interception in the first quarter

The Blue Raiders went 313 yards of offense, most of that in the second half. Lindsey ran for 178 yards and added 135 passing yards. Quarterback Pryor Lamb went 13-for-24 with one touchdown and one pick as well. David Gardner Jr. was a workhorse in the second half finishing with 20 carries for 84 yards. Davontaye Saunders had 4 touches including a big 66-yard touchdown run. Henry Cason caught four passes for 74 yards and caught the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Lindsey Wilson received the opening kick-off and a big return set up the Blue Raiders with good field position. Lindsey moved the chains twice before Cannon Johnson stepped in front of a pass to pick it off. CU responded by driving down the field. Jeremiah punched in a touchdown rush from six yards out, but a penalty by the Phoenix waved it off and CU had to settle for a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Jack Kantner

The next Lindsey Wilson possession, CU shut the Blue Raiders down as they went for it on fourth down on their half of the field. The gamble payed off for Lindsey Wilson as they held the Phoenix and forced them to turn the ball over as well on downs keeping the score at 3-0 after the first.

From that point, both defenses grinded out the rest of the half. Lindsey Wilson capitalized on a punt block by Brian Kelley. Kelley scooped it up and took it 29-yards into paydirt for the lone touchdown of the half. The point after attempt went off the upright to keep the score at 6-3 with 4:54 left in the half.

Cumberland received the opening kick of the second half and used a big drive pounding the ball on the ground. Bryant had big rushes down the field before Cornejo punched in the score from eight yards out to get the touchdown and regain the lead for Cumberland, 10-6 with 9:43 left in the third.

Lindsey Wilson immediately answered three plays later as Saunders found a big hole and went 66-yards for the score to put the Blue Raiders back ahead, 13-10, with 8:13 left in the quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Cumberland tried to answer before the drive stalled out. The Phoenix trotted out Kantner for a 38-yard attempt that he pulled left of the upright for the score to stand.

Cumberland got a big stop defensively, but the Blue Raiders pinned Cumberland deep inside their own 10 to start the fourth quarter.

The Phoenix drove 10 plays and 92 yards down the field to recapture the lead. On the drive Holloway completed a big third down pass to William Spence and then tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Rogers for a 17-13 lead with 10:40 left.

The ensuing kick-off, the Blue Raiders took back to the house, but a facemask penalty forced them to start backed up inside their 10-yard line. Lindsey Wilson still drove 93 yards down the field capped off with a huge one-handed catch by Henry Cason to give Lindsey Wilson the lead back at 20-17.

Cumberland went three-and-out on their next drive, punting the ball back to the Blue Raiders. The defense stood strong getting the ball back to Cumberland with 1:54 to play, but forced into a third long situation, Holloway threw an interception to seal the win for Lindsey Wilson.

The Phoenix will finish their season next week on the road at Faulkner. Kick-off time is slated for 11:00 a.m.
