Trevecca Claims Victory in the Battle of I-40 after 12-Year Hiatus.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Trevecca blows out the Phoenix in the resurgence of the Battle of I-40, 95-56, in Nashville on Saturday in an exhibition.

This was the first time Cumberland and former rival Trevecca Nazarene have been on the same floor in 12 years.

Cumberland (0-6) had a poor shooting night and were dominated on the boards which created a recipe for success for the Trojans. Cumberland went 20-for-66 from the field and struggled from deep making just three triples. Demarius Boyd and Jaylin Anglin were the only two Phoenix in double-figures as Boyd finished with 12 and Anglin posted 11 points.

Trevecca (5-1) had it going early and often going on big runs all game. The Trojans went 31-of-69 from the field and made 13 three pointers. Trevecca controlled the boards outrebounding CU 53-36 including 16 offensive rebounds that created 16 second chance points. Trevecca also went 20-for-26 from the free throw line.

Jikari Johnson had a big outing for Trevecca going for 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting with five threes. Jalen Page was the only other Trojan in double-figures scoring 15 points. Eight other Trojan players scored points to contribute to the win.

The Phoenix jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Triston Conger hit a jumper and Baqi Lecky drilled a three, but the Trojans went on a 11-0 run and pushed that to a 19-2 run. After that, Trevecca never gave the lead back. On that run, the Trojans hit five triples with three from Johnson and two from Page.

Cumberland settled into the game and started to climb back in it using a 10-4 spurt to cut it to a six-point deficit down 23-17, but Trevecca got hot and went on a huge 27-5 run to get up big in the first half. Boyd scored the final five points of the half, but the Phoenix trailed 50-27.

The Trojans came out in the second half with an 8-0 run to get up by 31 and continued that throughout the second half. Cumberland had a couple spurts throughout the half, but could never get it back within reach falling 95-56.

The Phoenix will continue to play NCAA Division II opponents traveling to Alabama for a game with Montevallo tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
