Boyd scores 30 as the Phoenix beat Montevallo for First Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala.--A day after losing big to Trevecca, the Phoenix bounce back to get an 18-point win over Division II Montevallo for their first win of the season. 

Cumberland (1-6) came out of the gates ready to play today jumping out to a quick lead and never giving it up leading wire-to-wire. Cumberland was efficient offensively and were disruptive on the defensive end. The team shot a solid 55.2% from the field, including 50% from three-point range.  On the defensive end, the Phoenix recorded 14 steals and six blocks forcing Montevallo into 24 turnovers that led to 23 points off turnovers. 

Leading the way was Demarius Boyd, who had an all-around great performance with a game-high 30 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. Boyd also contributed across the board, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out six assists, and recording six steals in 37 minutes of action. Khi Wallace was a rebound shy of a double-double notching 14 points and nine rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Triston Conger added 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting with three steals. Keshawn Robinson chipped in nine points.

Montevallo (4-2) struggled offensively in the matchup, shooting just 31.7% from the field and went 8-for-34 from three-point range. The Falcons did a good job getting to the line making 15-of-18 free throws. 

Jaylen Curry led the scoring for Montevallo with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting while adding nine rebounds and a block. Derek Moore contributed 12 points on an efficient 4-of-7 shooting and grabbed eight boards, while Brandon Fussell added nine points and a team-high five assists. 

Boyd started the game-high red hot and continued throughout scoring the first six points for Cumberland to get 6-0 after two minutes. The Falcons responded with two baskets to get within a bucket, but CU went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes for a 18-4 lead and forcing Montevallo into a timeout. 

Later in the first Cumberland led 31-20 and went on a 4-0 spurt to get back up by 15 before the Falcons drained a three and a free throw to get it right back. The Phoenix then went on another 5-1 spurt before Montevallo hit four free throws to end the first half up 40-29. 

The Falcons started the second half with a 6-4 spurt to get it back under 10 points, but CU got a layup from Conger and then four straight points from Wallace in the paint to get back up by 15, 50-35 with 15 minutes left. 

Over the next three minutes, the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to cut their deficit to eight., but Cumberland went on a 15-7 spurt over six minutes to push the lead back out to 68-54. Cumberland held on to the lead down the stretch and expanded it with a late 11-4 run over the final three minutes to win 81-63. 

Cumberland will finally be back at home on Tuesday as they play host to Crowley's Ridge at 5:30 p.m.
