Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Dominate from Wire to Wire in Rout of Pioneers

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's Basketball Team sent the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers back to Arkansas with a loss in hand, taking down CRC 95-72.

In a low scoring affair, each team had their share of the lead on several occasions, seeing the lead change six times in the first ten minutes. Crowley's last lead of the first half came with nearly six minutes off the clock, before Demarius Boyd and Khi Wallace combined their efforts to put Cumberland ahead for the foreseeable future.

Known for their strong defense, the Phoenix forced eight turnovers, grabbing three steals, to the tune of 11 points off turnovers in the first part of the half. Boyd held much of the offense in his hands as he got himself into double-digits on efficient shooting, also forcing several turnovers.

A Jalin Anglin three-pointer helped push Cumberland out to their largest lead of the half, but the Pioneers responded quickly with their own run to make it close. CRC had their chance to shoot technical free throws, putting one away to make it a ten-point game then sunk a three in the next possession to keep chipping away at the lead.

Just before halftime Joshua Johnson went on a small run of his own, going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line and helping to push Cumberland back out to a seven point lead to go into the half up 44-37.

Crowley's Ridge came out of the break firing, hitting a three to open the half, cutting their deficit to the smallest point it had been since early in the first half. Jalin Anglin helped stop the bleeding with a steal and a layup and followed that up with a big three-pointer to stretch the lead back out.

After a first half in which they struggled to get to the line, the Pioneers came out with the intent to attack the rim and they were rewarded handsomely with ten free throws in the first six minutes after the break, going 11-12 on their attempts. Cumberland on the flipside couldn't seem to miss, going 10-15 from the field as they outscored CRC halfway through the period.

Neither side was able to find much rhythm shooting the ball, combining to shoot for 8-32 from beyond the arc. Where both teams did find success though was at the rim, seeing Cumberland score 22 of their 35 second half points from the paint, a number which they dominated over the course of the game.

A 12-point run from Cumberland beginning at the ten minute mark eventually pushed the Phoenix out to a lead which was unsurmountable for the Pioneers, growing as large as 25 points in the closing moments of the game.

Cumberland will be back in action this weekend, playing two games at The Show in Kingsport. The first game of the showcase will be on Saturday, November 30th at 2:30 PM against Reinhardt University.
