Cumberland kick starts Thanksgiving Weekend with Victory over Reinhardt

KINGSPORT, Tenn–Cumberland comes out with a 88-78 win over Reinhardt to open up Thanksgiving weekend at the Show in Kingsport. 

Cumberland (3-6) rattled off their third-straight win beating the Eagles at the Show. The Phoenix were extremely efficient on the offensive end shooting 40-of-71 from the field and went 6-of-20 from three. The Phoenix played tough defense forcing 22 turnovers. Cumberland dominated the lane on both ends scoring 60 points in the paint and holding the Eagles to 24 points down low. The Phoenix had 18 steals in the contest.

Demarius Boyd finished as the leading scorer posting 25 points on 10-of-21 from the field with six boards, two assists, and two steals. Khi Wallace had a double-double posting 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jaylin Anglin added 14 points, knocking down two threes. Triston Conger was extremely efficient controlling the offense with 12 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Keshawn Robinson did a great job on the defensive end posting 10 steals and adding six points. 

Reinhardt (5-4) went 28-of-65 from the field and took 39 three-pointers making 14 of them. The Eagles outrebounded Cumberland 38-to-34. Nate Jones and Brasen James led the Eagles in points with 15 apiece. 

The Phoenix built a 10-7 lead in the first five minutes of play. Over the course, Wallace got going early with two jams and a lay in for six points in the early going. 

Out of the timeout, Conger scored back to back buckets to push the Phoenix up to an 8-1 run before the Eagles knocked down two straight triples to bring it to 14-13. Still up by one at 18-17, Cooper Abner layed up a two and Boyd buried a three from the wing for a 5-0 spurt and a 23-17 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. 

The Phoenix pushed the lead to 27-22 before a 5-0 spurt by the Eagles tied it at 27-27. Johnson answered with a jumper before a 30-second timeout by Cumberland up by two. 

The Eagles scoffed the next five points to go up 32-29, but the Phoenix found Wallace in transition for a slam dunk which sparked a 9-0 Cumberland run forcing Reinhardt into a timeout at 38-32. 

Reinhardt used the timeout well, coming back with a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 39-38, but Cumberland responded, going on a 8-0 run to get back up. Both sides swapped triples to end the half with Cumberland up 49-42. 

Cumberland came out quick in the second half and went on a 10-2 run in the first three minutes to get up by double-figures up 59-44. On the run, Boyd and Anglin knocked down threes. Reinhardt answered the run with back to back threes, but Anglin got out in transition with a quick two to keep the Phoenix up by 11, 61-50. The Phoenix went into a timeout with 13 minutes left up by 10, 63-53. 

Reinhardt cut the score to five points on an 11-2 run at 72-67 with 8:35 left. Cumberland went on a big 10-0 run over the next three minutes to get up 82-67, their largest lead of the game. The Eagles would get five back on 5-0 run forcing  the Phoenix into a timeout up 10, 82-72 with 3:07 left. 

Cumberland held on to the 10-point lead finishing the game with an 88-78 win to kickstart the Show. 

The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow to take on Tennessee Wesleyan. Tip-off is slated for 3:15 p.m. central time and 4:15 local time in Kingsport.
