Men's Soccer moves on to MSC Semifinals with 3-1 win over Freed-Hardeman

LEBANON, Tenn.--Three Phoenix goal scorers pace Cumberland's win over Freed-Hardeman in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals to advance in the tournament.

The Phoenix are back in conference play seeking to defend their conference championship. Cumberland picked up a good start on that journey with a 3-1 win over the Lions in Lebanon and now will advance to play in the semifinals against the winner of the Cumberlands and Georgetown later today on Monday in Columbia.

Cumberland controlled the game from the beginning, holding possession on the offensive half majority of the contest and outshooting the Lions 28-to-2. The Phoenix also capitalized on an early goal to settle into the match.

The Phoenix opened the game holding steady control of the game, holding the ball on their side of the pitch with two shots within the first seven minutes of the game. Rune Petersen got Cumberland on the board inside of the box after two passes from Philip Schmidtke and Robbie Lyons where Petersen found himself alone with the keeper at the back post to take the lead 1-0.

Shortly after the goal, the Phoenix applied pressure and Luis Cerejo forced another shot on goal and nearly scored the second goal a minute apart from another. CU was all around the goal with 20 minutes left in the first half until Lyons found Mark Donaldson with a beautiful pass inside of the box and Donaldson found his second goal of the season to extend the lead 2-0 over the Lions.

The second half kicked off with the Phoenix still keeping full control of possession on the ball. Until 17 minutes left in the game, the Lions got on the board by a Seabata Ts'emane goal that dribbled around a few defenders inside the box and scored to bring the Lions within one goal.

Moments later, Cumberland capitalized on a corner kick. Victor Ramirez crossed it in the box Kacper Wolicki knocked it in for his first career goal pushing the lead back to two goals at 3-1 with 13 minutes to play.

The Phoenix still were offensive down the stretch and picked up the 3-1 win to advance in the tournament.
