Women's Basketball Take Down IU Southeast for First Win

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball took down the Indiana Southeast Grenadiers en route to their first win of the young season.

The Phoenix came out the better of a slow start to the game, scoring the opening two points in what was a near three minute drought for both sides. Putting nine straight points on the board for Cumberland, Kayla Gordon took over and grew the CU lead to nine.

Marley Hyde and Mariyah Person both added onto the pile as Cumberland kept that lead for the remainder of the quarter, finishing with an 18-9 lead after the first. The Grenadiers started off on a four point run but Emaleigh Tarpley was able to stop the bleeding with a big three pointer.

Each team traded shots back and forth with the Phoenix lead never dropping below seven points, seeing Faith Colston lead the way for both teams with an efficient seven points along with several rebounds. Starting off the second half with a big nine point swing, Cumberland grew their lead all the way to 18 and didn't look back.

Kayla Gordon hit two three pointers and had all the offense flowing for the Phoenix in the third, but both sides slowed down again to start off the fourth. Neither team made a shot from the field after more than three minutes of action, leading to the lowest combined scoring quarter of the entire game.

Three different members of the Phoenix hit double-digit points, as Gordon led with 25, Colston had 13, and Tarpley rounded things out with 11. It was a big day for Cumberland on the boards as they outrebounded their opponents by 27, their largest margin of this short season.

The Phoenix will play again tomorrow as they take on tournament hosts, Huntington, at 3 PM.
