Phoenix start Dual Season Strong at Rocky Top Duals

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn.--Cumberland wrestling kicked off their dual season with three wins at the Rocky Top Duals hosted by Life University. The Phoenix picked up dominant wins over Truett-McConnell, Brewton-Parker, and Pikeville for a 3-0 start. 

The Phoenix started it off with by defeating Truett-McConnell with a commanding 40-6 victory. The Phoenix picked up wins in nine of the ten weight classes, with five coming by technical fall and one by pin.

Ellis Haney set the tone at 125 pounds, earning an 8-4 decision over Tyler Ramos to give CU an early 3-0 lead. At 133, Justin Bradford added bonus points with a 12-2 major decision against Isaac Hall. Hunter Kegley continued the momentum at 141 pounds, securing a technical fall in just 2:24, defeating Johnathan Pope 18-2.

Jared Dinh delivered the lone pin of the night at 149 pounds, taking down Elijah Mullins in 2:39, while Ellis Otting followed with a 15-0 technical fall at 157 pounds in just 2:31. Eli Clemmons piled on with a 15-3 major decision at 165 pounds against Derek Counsel.

Ranked wrestlers Anthony Pyron and Rocco Horvath added to the Phoenix dominance. Pyron, ranked 17th at 174 pounds, earned a lightning-fast 21-6 technical fall in just 1:49 over Mason Johnson. Horvath, ranked 19th at 184 pounds, edged William Parker in a hard-fought 11-8 decision.

Tyler Rowland, ranked 22nd at 197 pounds, capped the night's scoring for CU with an 18-3 technical fall in 6:42 over Spencer Fields. Truett-McConnell avoided the shutout as Phillip Terrell pinned Evan Dixon at heavyweight in 1:43 to close out the match.

Cumberland followed that with a commanding 48-4 victory over Brewton-Parker. The Phoenix won nine of ten matches, including five by fall and four by technical fall.

At 125 pounds, Truth Vesey kicked off the match with a pin in the first. Aslan Nadeau followed at 133 pounds with a 16-1 technical fall, and Hunter Kegley added six more points at 141 pounds after an forfeit.

Elijah Griffin, ranked 15th at 149 pounds, notched a 17-0 technical fall in three minutes, and Tanner Willett added another dominant 19-4 technical fall at 157 pounds. Ethan Gomez secured a pin at 165 pounds in 6:28, while Cameron Nesbitt picked up a hard-fought 4-2 decision at 174 pounds over 25th-ranked Sean Houston.

Though Brewton-Parker earned their lone victory at 184 pounds as #21 Zahquel Davis beat Rocco Horvath with a major decision. Tyler Rowland (197) and Evan Huling (285) both closed out the dual with pins..

The Phoenix started the match with Pikeville already up 24-0 after the Bears dropped four four weight classes. 

Truth Vesey opened the action at 125 pounds with an 18-1 technical fall in the first period. Aslan Nadeau followed with a second-period pin at 133 pounds, defeating Ethan Croom in 2:35..

At 149 pounds, 15th-ranked Elijah Griffin earned a 17-2 technical fall over Hayden Canady, while Eli Clemmons battled to a 6-4 decision at 165 pounds against Chase Price. 17th-ranked Anthony Pyron added six more points with a pin in 2:45 at 174 pounds.

Pikeville scored their lone win at heavyweight, as Reginald Whyte pinned Evan Dixon in 4:39 to close out the dual.

Hunter Kegley, Tanner Willett, Rocco Horvath, and Tyler Rowland each picked up wins via forfeit at 141, 157, 184, and 197 pounds, respectively

The Phoenix remain dominant in conference action with another convincing team victory.
