Brillhart's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Phoenix Past Firehawks 73-71 in Double Overtime

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Women's Basketball extended the game twice as Kayla Gordon and Marley Hyde hit shots at the horn to extend the game. In double overtime, Maddie Brillhart nailed the game-winner with under a second left in double-overtime to knock off Tennessee Southern, 73-71.

Cumberland (6-6) battled all game coming from down 12 in the third quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation as Gordn drilled a desperation three-pointer. The Phoenix found themselves down with the final possession of overtime and went for the win. Ever Walker missed the game-winning three, but Hyde was under the basket for the putback to keep it alive. In double overtime, CU had the final shot and again hit it as Brillhart won the game with 0.2 seconds left on the clock.

This game was everything, but normal as eight players fouled out, five for Tennessee Southern and three for the Phoenix. The teams combined to shoot 79 free throws as Cumberland finished 35-of-51 and the Firehawks went 20-for-28. The Phoenix had 33 turnovers in the win.

Despite committing 33 turnovers, the Phoenix cleaned it up after half only having 13 in the second half and throughout overtime.

Emaleigh Tarpley finished with a team-high 18 points and 20 rebounds for her third-consecutive double-double. Tarpley did a lot of damage at the line, shooting 14-of-16 from the free throw line before she fouled out. Gordon struggled early, but came up clutch down the stretch. She finished shooting 4-of-18 and went 8-of-11 from the line for 17 points. Ever Walker added in 11 points. Mariyah Person chipped in with nine. Tennessee Southern posted their largest lead in the third quarter up 35-23 at the halfway point and led by 11 going into the fourth up 41-30.
