Women's Basketball Bring Rain To Lebanon with Record Breaking 16 Three Pointers

LEBANON, Tenn. - - In their biggest three-point output since the 2005-06 season, the Cumberland Women's Basketball team handled Campbellsville Harrodsburg, 90-46.

After more than two minutes of the game going by without a point being scored, Kayla Gordon opened up the floodwalls on what became one of the biggest three-point performances in recent history. Faith Colston drove to the basket and once she drew the help defender, kicked it out to Gordon who sank the first shot of the game, 3-0.

Repaying the favor the following possession Gordon found Colston for another three, doubling the Cumberland lead. The Pioneers eventually got themselves on the board with a layup, but CU had the hot hand and kept pouring in the shots. By the end of the first quarter the Phoenix had sank seven shots from deep as Gordon, Colston, and Maddie Brillhart all had a pair of makes to their names.

The only member of the Phoenix to make a three pointer but not a second effort in the first quarter was Mariyah Person, though she started off the second frame with her second from deep and the Phoenix's eight. Cumberland did slow down from beyond the arc in the second quarter, hitting just five, but continued to shoot the rock with major efficiency.

After 20 minutes of action the Phoenix were major favorites with a 58-20 lead and double-digit threes for the first time in a game in several seasons.

Mariyah Person opened the third quarter like she did the second, splashing in a three pointer off Faith Colston's fifth assist of the night. Yet again Person was able to put away another three, her third of the night, and the Phoenix were rolling on their way to their fifth victory of the season.

With the threes starting to slow down Coach Mark Vaughn looked to his front court and Marley Hyde and Jordan Harris delivered with six straight points to end the quarter with a 44 point lead. The fourth quarter was technically the closest one of the night as Harrodsburg got some offense going with a pair of threes of their own, while holding CU to their worst shot percentage of the day.

Despite that slowing down of the offense the Phoenix managed that 44 point gap all the way to the final whistle, all while breaking the single game modern record for three pointers made with 16. Cumberland spread the rock around in this game with five players reaching double-digit points, Maddie Brillhart (14), Faith Colston (14), Mariyah Person (12), Kayla Gordon (11), and Emaleigh Tarpley (10). Both AC Whitehead and Jordan Harris were a point shy of double-digits also.

Cumberland will play at home three more times before Christmas break will kick into effect, first taking on Fisk this coming Tuesday at 7 PM.
