Gordon Big Again in Phoenix 65-63 Win over Bethel

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Women's Basketball downs Bethel in a back-and-forth game winning in the final minutes in their first game at home in nearly a month, 65-63. 

Cumberland (8-11, 1-5 MSC) snaps a six-game losing streak with the win and picks up their first win in conference play. The Phoenix shot 45.5% from the field and made five three pointers. Cumberland outrebounded Bethel 36-to-28 and had 12 offensive rebounds in the contest. 

Kayla Gordon went off again for 26 points, her seventh-straight game with 20 or more points. Gordon finished 10-of-15 from the field with two threes and five rebounds. The rest of the points for Cumberland were spread out as Eubanks had nine, Freeman added eight, and Colston added seven including big points down the stretch. 

Bethel (13-9, 0-6 MSC) remains winless in conference play with the loss. The Wildcats shot 43.1% from the field and knocked down seven threes including five in the first half. 

Madison Hart took over for Bethel in the fourth quarter finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Hart posted 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the fourth. Kayla Gilmore was the only other Bethel player in double figures with 10 points.  

The Phoenix started the first with back-to-back baskets from Eubanks and Gordon to grab a 4-0 lead quickly, but the Wildcats answered with four-straight. After Gordon gave Cumberland the lead again with a spinning jumper in the lane, Bethel drained a three for the first lead 7-6. 

Gordon again answered the bell with a three, but Bethel again drilled another. Colston was fouled and made the shot to bring us to our first stoppage with an 11-10 lead with 4:53 left in the quarter. 

Out of the break, Bethel hit their third three-pointer of the game and Freeman answered with a triple for Cumberland's second three of the game. Gordon again made a layup after a couple of minutes of scoreless action, but was slow to get up after the play allowing Bethel to hit their fourth three uncontested. The triple sparked a 7-0 run for Bethel to end the quarter with a 20-16 lead. 

The run continued into the second quarter as Hart scored the first points of the quarter after two offensive rebounds for Bethel. After Hart's basket both teams were scoreless for three minutes of clock before Kayla Gilmore hit another three to extend it to a 12-0 run and a 25-16 lead at the second quarter media. 

After a free throw from the Wildcats, Hart converted a layup for the final points of a 15-0 run. Swafford was sent to the line to where she hit one-of-two free throws to end an eight minute stretch where the Phoenix did not score. The point got Cumberland going and a turnover led to fastbreak two for Gordon to put her in double-figures and cut into the deficit 28-19.

The Phoenix made a charge in the final two minutes to cut it to a five-point deficit. Freeman drained a three, Gordon converted two baskets for a 33-28 score. 

Cumberland continued to climb back in the game in the opening minutes of the second half. Freeman and Swafford hit back-to-back jumpers for a 4-0 spurt and one-point game. Both sides traded baskets before two free throws from Swafford gave Cumberland their first lead since the first quarter as they recovered from an 11-point deficit. 

Bethel's Lauren Bryant drained another three for the Wildcats to give them the lead again, but the next possession Alyssa Goehring scored in the paint to tie the game. The Phoenix from there went on a run with two free throws from Gordon, a putback from Goehring, and two more free throws from Gordon for an 8-0 run and 44-38 lead with 2:32 left in the third. 

Cumberland scored two more points, but Bethel scored six in the final minutes to go into the fourth with a 46-44 lead for the Phoenix. 

Madison Hart went to work down low to help Bethel give Bethel a 50-48 lead after the first few possessions of the fourth, but Gordon took over in the fourth to get the battle going. She scored seven-straight points with a three and two jumpers to go into the media timeout down 58-57 with 3:55 to play. 

Down 60-57, Eubanks converted a huge and-one to tie the game with under three to play. After two free throws from Bethel, Colston drained a three from the left wing forcing Bethel into a timeout down by one, 63-62 with 1:17 left. 

Colston came up big again after a free throw tied from Bethel. Colston made a layup to give Cumberland the lead with 49 seconds left 65-63, but the dramatics weren't over as Bethel fouled to send Freeman to the line with eight seconds and a chance to ice the game. Freeman missed both free throws to give the Wildcats a chance, but the defense stood strong giving Cumberland their first conference win of the season. 

The Phoenix have a tough road game on Saturday as they travel to No. 3 Campbellsville on Saturday. Tip off is set for noon central time and 1:00 p.m. local time in Campbellsville.
