Late Surge by Phoenix Not Enough To Overcome Big Deficit

LEBANON, Tenn.— Cumberland baseball surged in the late innings, but could not overcome an 8-0 lead to Johnson falling in the series finale 8 to 6.

Cumberland (3-7) had a slow start to the game as the bats took too long to get going. The Phoenix struck out 13 times in the contest and struggled to get a timely hit.

Cumberland starter Thomas Wilhite was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in the first inning. Wilhite recorded the first two outs quickly, but then issued two walks and a single to load the bases. He walked into runs, and an RBI single gave the Royals a 3-0 lead.

Brennyn Abendroth came in on the mound in the third. He worked a scoreless third inning, but after an error with two outs in the fourth gave up a two run homer to Bryson Shown to extend Johnson's lead to 5-0.

In the sixth, the Royals, tacked on three more runs. Shown hit a two RBI double down the left field line and then later scored on a wild pitch for an 8-0 lead.

The Phoenix started to show some fight in the seventh. With two outs, Stoney Smith reached on an error, Javy Beal singled, and Holyk walked to load the bases. Dee Triplett was also issued a free pass for Cumberlands first run of the game.

In the eighth, Cumberland made it interesting scoring four runs. Seth Sweet-Chick singled to right to start the frame. Alonzo Zuniga reached on an error and moved up on the throw to put runners on first and second. Daniel Schweitzer singled in Sweet-Chick. Smith hit a sac fly that was thrown away allowing two runs to score. Singles from Beal and Holyk set up another RBI single from Triplett to cut it to 8-5.

Down by three in the final inning, Zuniga led off the inning by beating out a single up the middle. His courtesy runner eventually came in to score after two wild pitches. The Phoenix put runners on the corners with the go-ahead run at the plate, but the Royals induced a game-ending double play to win 8-6.

Cumberland will play at home on Tuesday as they play host to Tennessee Southern. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
