Cumberland Softball starts 2024 Season with Two Wins

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland softball opened the season with a walk off win in game one over Blue Mountain Christian and backed that up with a win over Kentucky Christian to start the season strong.

Game one was a pitcher's duel from the start of it as both Kaitlin Higgins and the Toppers starter Jacey Weaver went toe-to-toe. The first four innings saw a combined three runners reach base.

The fifth inning both teams started to get some traction offensively, but both Blue Mountain Christian nor Cumberland could push a run across.

In the sixth the Toppers struck first as they loaded bases with three singles and one out. A chopper to second forced the out at two, but a run  came in to score to give Blue Mountain the lead. Higgins got out of the jam with another groundout to limit it to one run.

The Phoenix leveled the game back at 1-1 in the bottom half as Anna Lay started the inning off by beating out a single to shortstop. Ashley Evans followed with a bunt for a single to put two runners on. Lay and Evans both took off and the throw to third went into left field allowing Lay to score. With one out and Evans on third, she tried to score on a groundout to throw, but was called out after sliding around the base and the catcher came back to tag her to keep the game tied.

The Toppers got a runner in scoring position with one out, but Higgins induced a pop out and a ground out to give Cumberland a chance to win the game in the bottom half.

Abby Chappell started the seventh inning rally with a double off the left field fence. Abbie Peach singled up the middle top move Chappell to third and Jacey Hatfield bunted for a single to load the bases with one out. Gracie Arnemann delivered the game-winning hit with a walk off single up the middle as the Phoenix won 2-1.

Higgins picked up the complete game win scattering five hits while allowing one run.

Game one was dominated by the pitching while game two the Phoenix bats came alive scoring 12 runs on nine hits.

Cumberland trailed going into the bottom of the first as the Knights pushed across three runs, but it did not take the Phoenix long to get those runs back. In the bottom half of the inning, Lay and Evans both drew walks to start it off. Kenzie France roped a double to left center to plate a run and Chappell followed with an RBI-single. Sara Brogdon laced a double down the left field line to plate two more for a 4-3 lead after the first.

The Phoenix tacked on six more runs in the second as Chappell hit a three-run triple off the base of the right field wall. She later scored on Brogdon's second double of the game. Brylee Bartley came in on a wild pitch and Jacey Hatfield singled home Brogdon for a 10-3 lead after two.

In the bottom of the third, Lay walked to start the inning. She proceeded to swipe second and third before scoring on an RBI groundout from Kenzie France. Chappell brought home Karsyn France with a single in her third hit of the game and 12-3 lead.

The Phoenix held the lead throughout the fourth and fifth getting the 5-inning mercy rule win over the Knights to move to 2-0 to start the season.

Carley Clinard got the start in the circle game two. Clinard settled in after the first inning allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts.

Cumberland will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, February 14th at home to host Johnson University.
