Cumberland Baseball splits Home Opener with No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland took game one of the series with a 17-4 win hitting five homers in the game, but 14th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan answered in game two to win 5-4.

Dee Triplett had quite the day going 6-for-7 in both games with two runs and seven runs batted in. RIley Light went 3-for-3 in game two with a double. Joseph Rodriguez and Toshiki Kuriya each posted three and two hits in the first game. Preston Welchel added three hits on the day.

Cumberland struck first in game one putting two on the board to grab an early 2-0 lead. Toshi Kuriya hit a double off the centerfield fence, Holyk walked to put two runners on for Dee Triplett. Triplett rattled a double into the right field corner to score Kuriya and Holyk scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.

Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of Cumberland errors in the second as the leadoff man reached on an error and then moved up to second after a failed pick off attempt. Torres walked the bases loaded and induced a double play ball from Jake Thompson, but Thompson beat it for a fielder's choice RBI and 2-1 score.

The Wildcats leveled the game with two outs and two on. The Wildcats tried for a double steal, but the runner on second shut it down leaving the runner on first hung out to dry. The Phoenix picked him off, but the runner stayed in long to allow Stavola to get in before the tag was made.

In the bottom half, Triplett jacked a two-out home run to the left-center field to get the run back and lead 3-2.

The Phoenix busted the game open in the fifth and sixth inning. Seth Sweet-Chick had a clutch two-out double down the left field line before scoring on a Preston Welchel single for a 6-2 lead after five.

Cumberland hung 11 runs in the sixth inning as they bopped four homers in the frame. Triplett crushed a grand slam to right, Joseph Rodriguez, Welchel, and Kuriya each hit homers for the Phoenix.

Indiana Wesleyan tacked on two runs in the seventh to get the final score of 17-4.

Ethan Torres worked around four walks to throw five complete and get the win. Torres punched out five and allowed just two hits. Bracken Rice threw the final two innings giving up four hits and two runs.

Game two was a grind with both teams jockeying for momentum. The Wildcats struck first in the third inning with a solo home run from Nick Wiley to right field, but in the bottom half of the inning Triplett hit an RBI double scoring Tim Holyk from first base to tie it at 1-1.

Indiana Wesleyan picked up two more runs in the fourth, the Phoenix retired the first two batters of the inning before four-straight hits plated two more to give IWU a 3-1 lead.

Cumberland again responded as Riley Light led off the inning with a single and Trenton Duchsherer hit a double to put runners on second and third. Light scored on a wild pitch and courtesy runner Ty Martin scored on a fielder's choice from Kuriya to level it at 3-3.

In the sixth, MJ Stavola hit a two-out solo home run to left center field to put the Wildcats up and Indiana Wesleyan added one more in the seventh for a two-run deficit for Cumberland.

Cumberland rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Triplett got it going with a single. After he moved up on a wild pitch, Welchel brought him home with a single up the middle to get within one. After that, the Wildcats went to the pen once more and Light beat out an infield single to put two on and a walk to pinch-hitter Brandon Boxer loaded the bases for Rodriguez. Rodriguez worked it to a full count, but grounded out to short to end the game with a 5-4 loss.

Carter Ross suffered the loss in game two. Rost threw 5.2 innings giving up eight hits and four runs. He also struck out seven batters. Anthony Patterson threw the final 1.1 innings giving up one run on three hits.

Will Eldridge was phenomenal in relief for the Wildcats. He threw 3.2 innings giving up two hits in the seventh inning after working three hitless frames. He picked up the win and Cam LaFuze earned the save.

No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan and RV Cumberland will be back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. to complete the series.
