Cumberland Baseball Wins in Run-Rule Victory over Milligan, 11-0

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball wins in dominant fashion taking down Milligan in an 11-0 run rule victory on Tuesday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland (15-8) played one of their most complete games all season as the bats were on fire early and the pitching staff tossed six different arms to hold Milligan to just two hits.

Riley Light went 3-for-4 at the plate belting a three-run homer in the sixth to give the Phoenix the run-rule lead. Preston Welchel went 2-for-4 and bopped his ninth home run of the season. Daniel Schweitzer got the start today and took advantage of his opportunity hitting a three-run home run in the first.

Jake Green started the game on the mound and was the only Phoenix to throw more than one inning. Green gave up one hit and punched out three in the win. Alex Smith, Justin Boggs, Quinlin Wiley, and Will Caro each threw one hitless inning a piece. Anthony Patterson tossed the seventh to complete the shutout.

The pitching staff struck out 11 batters in their outing allowing just two hits, three walks, and one hit by pitch.

Cumberland started it early as Brandon Boxer lead the game off with a walk. Toshiki Kuriya drove him in with a double in the right-center field gap. Two batters later, Welchel roped an 0-2 home run to center field to push it to 3-0. Light singled up the middle and Javier Beal drew a base on balls to set up a three-run home run from Schweitzer to right field and a 6-0 lead after the first.

The Phoenix added another run in the second as Dee Triplett singled to center to start the rally. Light singled to left and Beal drove in the run with a single for a 7-0 lead.

The score stood at 7-0 until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Cumberland started a two-out rally with Kuriya and Triplett each reaching on a walk. Welchel hit a double down the left field line to plate a run and Light hit a three run bomb to right to give Cumberland a 11-0 lead.

The Phoenix will be back in action this weekend to open up Mid-South Conference play against Georgetown College. The series as of now is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, but rain may push the series around this weekend.
