Baseball Splits Doubleheader in Conference Opener Against Georgetown

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland baseball team opened up conference action at home with a doubleheader against Georgetown, dropping game one,7-1, and storming back in game two to run-rule Georgetown in seven innings, 13-3.

Cumberland jumped on the Tigers early, as Brandon Boxer walked to lead off the game and stole both second and third base, setting up Riley Light to drive in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. From that point though, Georgetown was seemingly in the drivers seat.

Both teams shut each other down in the second frame, but the top of the third brought trouble for the Phoenix. Two Tigers got on base with singles to shallow center field, and a Landon Dismang three run homer gave GC the lead and all of the momentum.

The Phoenix could not seem to find a way through Anthony Barrera who was nearly untouchable after the first inning, allowing just five hits the rest of the game. Stoney Smith swung a hot bat, going 2-3 and threatening whenever he had the chance, though Cumberland could not seem to find many opportunities to push a runner across the plate.

Outside of the third, neither team had much offense to speak of as Brennyn Abendroth pitched the final four and a third inning, conceding just three runs in his tenure. On the opposite side of the field for the Phoenix, Boxer got on base three times from three walks, but the Tigers drove in three more runs to make the deficit too large for the Phoenix to overcome.

Georgetown took game one of the series by a score of 7-1, however, game two had a much different outlook for Cumberland.

Ethan Torres started the second game and came out gunning, putting three-up and three-down. The Tigers answered duely with their own shutout inning, though there would be no drought of offense in the following innings.

In the second GC jumped on Torres who was unlucky to see a leadoff walk turn into his first run of the game, albeit unearned, as a throwing error at third base pushed Rios all the way from first to home. That error gave the Tigers a runner on third and the lead, with no outs.

A single to follow that at-bat pushed the Tigers ahead 2-0, but the Phoenix regathered themselves and Torres forced back-to-back ground outs and punched out the final batter of the inning. Thankfully for the Phoenix, this game would not mimic the last, as Cumberland broke the floodgates wide open in the bottom of the second.

Javier Beal took a four pitch walk to give the Phoenix a runner and Toshi Kuriya smacked a double into the gap to score Beal. With momentum creeping onto the home side's favor, Alonzo Zuniga came to the plate and took a fastball off the back to keep the rally going.

With the defense rattled, Ian Krump drilled a ball at the third baseman, who would mishandle his throw and load the bases. The top of the lineup was back up and Brandon Boxer showed his maturity, sending a deep sacrifice fly to right field to push across Kuriya and sit Ty Martin, running for Zuniga, in scoring position.
The bases seemed to keep themselves loaded, as Stoney Smith walked them full again and Dee Triplett took a massive 3-2 ball to walk in a run, giving the Phoenix their first lead of the series. Preston Welchel again forced in another run, taking a pitch to the leg to take his place at first base and send Ian Krump walking to home plate.

Riley Light still had some damage of his own to do, slapping a first-pitch double down the third base line to score both Triplett and Smith.

Both teams found success in the third inning with Georgetown hitting a leadoff double and grounding out the following two plays, giving the runner a chance to advance both times and find his way home. Cumberland followed that up with another inning full of loaded bases, as Triplett and Welchel again walked their way to first base and forced runs across the plate.

After that point the game was 8-3 in favor of CU and the Phoenix were not going to look back. Brandon Boxer's hot day continued as he hit a single to shallow right field and scored Ty Martin.

Ethan Torres also appeared to be a man on a mission, going three-up and three-down for three straight innings, giving the Phoenix a chance to end their day early with a run rule victory. It took seven innings to get to that point, but Dee Triplett and Preston Welchel's back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the 7th gave CU the extra push they needed.

Zuniga pushed across a run with a single and Boxer had a curtain call on a fielder's choice, scoring Kuriya and giving the ten-run gap which was needed for the run rule.

Torres pitched a gem through seven, as he allowed just four hits and one earned run, taking the second game of the series for Cumberland.

The Phoenix will be back at the Six tomorrow for the final game of the series, looking for penultimate victory. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
