Phoenix Blast Six Homers to Run Win-Streak to Nine Games

LEBANON, Tenn.--Phoenix blast six home runs to win a home run derby against Bryan 11-8 and run the win-streak to nine games.

Cumberland (12-7) had some offensive firepower in the game with Javier Beal hitting two home runs, Toshiki Kuriya, Tim Holyk, Riley Light, and Ian Krump each hit bombs as well to make up the score. The Phoenix pushed across just one run in the game that did not come from a home run.

Reid Madariaga got the start on the hill and tossed the first four innings giving up seven hits and five runs with five strikeouts. Logan Baskin threw the next five innings in relief to get the win. Baskin allowed five hits and three runs on five strikeouts.

The Lions managed to hit four home runs in the game from four different players. The first came in the top of the first as Dante Morton hit a solo shot to center to put the Lions on the board.

The Phoenix responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Stoney Smith lead off with a single and moved all the way around to third base. He came in to score on a Holyk groundout to level the score.

Bryan got creative in the second inning on an 0-2 count with two outs and runners on the corners. They intentionally had the runner picked at first while trying to steal home and managed to have both runners safe on the play to take a 2-1 lead.

Kuriya blasted a solo home run in the second inning off the scoreboard to tie the game at 2-2 once again.

Madariaga threw up a zero in the top of the third and Beal jacked his first home run of the game to right to go up 3-2.

With two outs in the fourth, Bradley Prince double to center followed by a Jackson Smith home run to right field. Tyler Cullen on the next pitch hit a home run to right for the Lions to grab a 5-3 advantage.

The lead lasted for just three batters as Smith singled with one out in the bottom half to set up a two run homer from Beal to tie the game at 5-5 going to the fifth.

Danny Marquez lead off the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field for a Bryan lead, but in the bottom of the sixth the Phoenix busted the game open with three bombs.

Holyk hit a two-run shot to get it going. Two batters later, Light hit a two-run home run to right field, and then three batters later, Krump belted a two-run home run to center for an 11-6 lead.

Cumberland was held at bay the rest of the game while Basking held Bryan quiet until the ninth. The Lions pushed across two runs, but not enough to overcome the five-run deficit.

The Phoenix are back at it this upcoming weekend against Briar Cliff. There is rain in the forecast, so those games may be shifted around later in the week.
