Phoenix Sweep Doubleheader to Run Win-Streak to 11 Games

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball sweeps the doubleheader over Briar Cliff to push the win streak to 11-consecutive games. The Phoenix scored early in game one en route to a 9-4 win and closed the day with a 3-1 win.

The Phoenix came out swinging in game one pushing across seven runs in the first inning to take a comfortable lead.

Cumberland quickly loaded the bases and Dee Triplett roped a two-RBI double down the line. Next batter, Preston Welchel hit a three-run bomb to right field. Seth Sweet-Chick reached after he was hit by a pitch and Alonzo Zuniga hit a line drive home run down the left field line to give Cumberland a 7-0 lead.

The Chargers chipped away at the lead scoring one in the second, two in the third, and one more in the fourth to get with three down 7-4.

Welchel again delivered for Cumberland to widen the gap with a two run shot to right field, his eighth home run of the season and pushing it back out to a 9-4 lead where the score would stay.

Carter Rost got the start on the mound. Rost threw 3.0 innings giving up 10 hits and four runs. Brennyn Abendroth tossed the final four innings in relief to get the win. Abendroth allowed no runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

The Chargers jumped on Cumberland starter Ethan Torres in the first inning pushing across one run. Torres walked the first two batters and then hit the third to lead the bases. Jared Sitzman hit a sacrifice fly to right to push one across, but Torres stranded the other two on the bags for a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Stoney Smith reached on a walk and Triplett banged a two-out, two-run home run to left field for a 2-1 lead.

Cumberland would load the bases with no outs in the third. Briar Cliff starter Matthew Hmielewski forced Triplett and Welchel to hit roll-over groundballs to first where they forced the out at home. Riley Light at the plate hit a rocket to short and beat out the throw to plate a run for a 3-1 lead.

That was all the run support Cumberland needed in this one as the bullpen held the Chargers scoreless after the first inning.

Torres got a no-decision for his efforts, throwing three complete, allowing two hits and one run. He struck out three, walked two and hit two batters. Quinlin Wiley picked up the win throwing three innings of scoreless baseball. He gave up four hits and punched out two. Bracken Rice picked up his first save of the season throwing just nine pitches to record three outs.

The Phoenix and Chargers are set for game three tomorrow at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium. As of right now, first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., but that may be moved around due to rain in the forecast tomorrow.
