Softball Takes Two from Bethel in MSC Action

McKenzie, Tenn. - - The Cumberland softball team took on the Bethel Wildcats on the road in their second to last conference series of the year and won both games one and two, 2-0 and 8-5.

There was little to report on in the early goings of the first game of the weekend series, as neither team managed to get more than one runner on base until the third inning. Bryley Bartley hit a leadoff single in the top of the frame and was able to advance all the way to third from a groundout and Gracie Arnemann single, though it did not amount to any runs.

After allowing just three total hits through five innings, the Phoenix finally gave her some of the run support she was looking for. Anna Lay laid down a bunt to get on base and stole second as she has a knack of doing.

Executing a hit and run, Lay took off from second base and Ashley Evans hit a single to right that scored Lay and broke the deadlock. Again Higgins shut down the Wildcats and Cumberland looked to respond the next inning.

A leadoff triple from Jacey Hatfield was exactly what the doctor ordered and Sara Brogdon made sure that Hatfield found her way across home plate. Getting her first hit of the game, Brogdon hit a double in the gap that doubled the lead for CU, 2-0.

Bethel challenged in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runners on base, but Higgins kept her resume clean and secured her 14th complete game of the year and added a shutout.

Game two flipped the script from earlier as the Phoenix managed to put up runs straight away. Anna Lay slapped a single and stole second base then Ashley Evans reached first on an error, putting two on and no outs.

From there Abby Chappell hit a single into right field and Lay scored from second, again keeping two runners on base. A deep flyout to right field allowed Evans to advance to third and Jacey Hatfield drove her in with a sacrifice fly.

Keeping the offense flowing for another batter, Chappell was able to steal a bag and Sara Brogdon doubled to bring in the third run of the inning and cement the hot start for the Phoenix. Bethel had something working in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases, but they left all three runners stranded as Carley Clinard found her way out of a jam.

Cumberland kept the pressure on the Wildcats in the second, scoring another run for reinforcement. Gracie Arnemann hit a single and Ashley Evans kept her good start to the weekend going, hitting a triple to score the lead runner.

Keeping the great pitching up, Clinard continued to keep the Wildcats silent and the Phoenix offered her more run support. Leading off the fourth inning, Abbie Peach hit her second home run of the year, adding to her senior day effort.
In the bottom of that same inning Bethel broke their own shutout, recording as many hits as they had in game one, in one inning. A pair of singles and a double pushed across a single runner, but Clinard again worked her way out of the jam to make it 5-1 going into the sixth.

Both teams went the following three half innings without any more damage being done, the Wildcats however finally found a way through Clinard in the bottom of the seventh. Three hits, an error, and a hit by pitch all helped Bethel on the way to a four run comeback, forcing extra innings.

Cumberland made certain that they had the sweep secured on day one of the weekend series as they put up three runs in the top of the eighth. In a very eventful inning, CU was gifted two errors by their opponents and made no mistake in taking advantage of them.

After Sara Brogdon reached on an error, Abbie Peach then walked to put runners on both first and second. A bunt from Gracie Arnemann pushed both runners over and Ashley Evans and Abby Chappell both landed themselves RBI singles to take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

After coming in for the save, Annalee Moore forced weak contact three times and got the Phoenix out of the game with no more damage being done, and no earned runs on her stat sheet.

Cumberland will play another doubleheader tomorrow as they look for their first series sweep in MSC action.
