Softball Take Series from Widlcats 3-1 after Day Two Split

McKenzie, Tenn. - - The Cumberland softball team could not manage to get their elusive series sweep, but managed to grab three out of four from Bethel, splitting today's games 0-2 and 9-4.

Grabbing two wins on Friday, the Phoenix had a series sweep in mind and the Wildcats stood in their way. The first game on Friday was a pitcher's dream and the first game on Saturday was much the same.

Neither team had more than a single runner get on base through four and a half innings, Bethel however found their answer in the bottom of the fifth. After allowing five straight hits, the Phoenix were able to tame the Wildcats and only allow a single run.

That was not all that the home side had to offer though, again pushing across another runner in the sixth inning to have a 2-0 lead. The Phoenix struggled to break through the Wildcat pitching despite the great performance again from Kaitlin Higgins.

Never finding more than two baserunners in an inning, Cumberland had to look to the four game of the series to secure their potential third victory. Higgins still pitched an incredible game, despite the loss, allowing nine hits and just two earned runs in her outing.

Starting game four how they ended game two, the Phoenix put up early runs for offensive support. Ashley Evans added another triple to her already strong weekend, allowing Abby Chappell to drive her in with a single.

Kenzie France joined in on the action and got a single of her own that pushed Chappell into scoring position, where Jacey Hatfield then drove in the second run of the inning with yet another single. Cumberland had a 2-0 lead early but the Wildcats answered quickly.

Bethel's leadoff batter hit herself a solo home run to kick off the scoring for the home side, but Kaitlin Higgins calmed things down and got out of the inning with the lead still protected. BU were not finished though, biding time until they found more runs in the bottom of the third.

A leadoff single paired with two errors got the inning started off poorly for the Phoenix and the Wildcats were not forgiving. Hitting a single up the middle helped to score two runs and Cumberland was able to turn a double play to clear the bases, but another runner would score, making it 4-2 for Bethel.

Cumberland didn't stay on the back foot for long though, adding a run right back in the top of the next inning. Abbie Peach hit a leadoff single and Gracie Arnemann laid down a sacrifice bunt to push her over to second.

Anna Lay hit a single and it sent Peach all the way home, cutting the gap from two down to one. With Annalee Moore again coming into the game like she did in game two yesterday, the Phoenix locked it in on offense.

After a layoff in the fifth inning, Cumberland came back with a vengeance in the sixth. All with two outs, the Phoenix punished the Wildcats for their error filled inning, pushing across six runs on four hits.

Moore finished what was the first win of the season, allowing just one hit the next two innings.

Cumberland will be on the road next weekend for a non-conference doubleheader, taking on Bryan College (Tenn.)
