Phoenix Drop Doubleheader Against (RV) Lions

Lebanon, Tenn. - - The Cumberland softball team struggled to get past Freed-Hardeman's defense, dropping both games of today's doubleheader, 6-0 and 9-2, respectively.

The Lions struck early, hitting a bloop single with one out and slapping a double into the left field gap to score the runner from first. Making certain that Freed didn't run away early though, Kaitlin Higgins struck out the next batter and forced weak contact from the five hole hitter for the easy out at first.

Cumberland broke up the no-hitter early from an Ashley Evans single but couldn't find anything to advance her over, making it a 1-0 game heading into the second inning. Freed-Hardeman came back swinging in the second, adding two more runs to their lead.

A leadoff single and bunt put two runners on with no outs and Freed looked to do damage. Dropping down a perfect sacrifice bunt, the Lions pushed both runners into scoring position and both a hit and an error pushed those two over.

Again the Phoenix were shutout in the bottom of the third as Chloe Winters was working well in the circle, allowing just two singles and walking no batters up to that point. Freed still could not be held scoreless in the top of the fourth either, scoring a run on two hits and an error from the Phoenix, making it a 5-0 game.

CU was finally able to hold off the Lions attack in the fifth inning, but the story of the game ended up being the strong pitching from Freed, as the Phoenix were unable to crack the senior from Nashville. FHU would add one more run in the sixth inning to make it 6-0 gap, which is how the game would end.

Carley Clinard was in the circle for game two and got off to a good start, shutting out the Lions, though they did the same to the Phoenix in the bottom of the inning. Both teams found success in the second inning, mimicking each other with a single run scored on two hits.

The Lions kept their bats hot in the third inning, hitting back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and a long single was enough to push the pair of runners in, taking back their lead, 3-1. Clinard struck out the next batter and forced a groundout to get herself out of the jam.

Freed's good pitching from game one continued into game two and the Phoenix struggled to break through the Lion's defense. In the top of the fifth Alivia Eggleston hit a three-run homer to left field to double their score.

Cumberland were able to get themselves back on the board, answering the Lion's three-run effort with a run of their own. Anna Lay led off with an infield single to the third baseman and added yet another stolen base to her season tally.

From there Ashley Evans hit a single to left field and was able to score Lay, while also advancing to second on the throw. Freed was yet again able to get themselves out of the jam though, grabbing a strike out and a slick double play.

The sixth inning went by with no damage done by either team, but the Lion's again struck in the top of the seventh. Cumberland attempted to mount a comeback on several occasions, Freed's three-run inning grew the deficit to a point the Phoenix could not overcome.

Despite the home side's effort in the second game of the doubleheader, they had to settle for an 0-2 record on the day, with two more games to make a comeback starting tomorrow.

The Phoenix will be at home for the last time this season, tomorrow, as the regular season comes to a close with the second half of the Freed-Hardeman series. First pitch is set for noon.
